So I learned from you guys about the MacIntyre rig, what can you tell me about making a lanyard for a neck knife that will be safe and not hang me from it?

I am currently just using 550 cord and not sure how to make it break or slip if hung up on something and NOT become a noose!

Thanks

There's a quick release that I got at the big box craft store in the paracord supply section; pulls apart easily and isn't bulky. I'll try and get a pic of it, but it's basically a fastex buckle that's tiny; it clamps onto gutted paracord.

could could use a loop of dental floss to join two ends of paracord and then heat shrink them. "strong enough"

but then you'll lose shit

hardly anybody chokes out from that stuff anyway, because you have time to your your necker.

now, breaking your neck, that's another story.

Another option is to gut the paracord and thread a safety chain (one of those ubiquitous metal balls linked together things) through it, and frap & melt-weld the paracord to the chain near the connector.

Three good ideas, Man, you guys are sharp! I'm not sure where I would get one of those metal chains, drug store?? The dental floss would sure be the cheap option. I've also see some magnet snap deals, but not sure if they world be strong enough or where you would get a good one? Any commercial neck knife makers offer a quality safe lanyard?

Bead chain can be found and any big box hardware store, and army navy surplus stores. At the hardware store it is normally near the ceiling fans and ceiling light fixtures. Some places even sell it by the roll, and they sell packs of the joiners as well.

I have a neck knife, doesn't bother me because I have a razor sharp knife hanging from it. If it gets snagged, one quick slash of the paracord and I'm free.

I'm 260lbs and would rather avoid being hung by a thin cord...even if I could cut it quickly!

Tucked inside sounds like good advice!

I just bought some of the ball chain and going to try that first, thanks for letting me know where to buy it!!

I dont like mine break away, I just tie it. But I did make them breakaway for my kids BK14s.

I make them with heat shrink tubing and paracord. About 3 inches of heat shrink. Slide the tubing over the cord, then lightly melt the 2 paracord ends together. Then slide the heat shrink tubing over the melted ends and heat it up shrinking it tightly around the ends. Holds great but will pop apart with enough weight.

Great idea B. Mauser.
I just use straight up paracord. Tucked into my shirt. Only a problem if you use a sternum strap on a pack as well.
That said - anyone ever lose a knife because of a breakaway? Urban legend?
Not gonna ask if anyone was ever hung by their neck knife :D

Isnt that how David Carradine died ?

Not.....exactly.....

...though that is as sad a mental image as any for why one should have a breakaway on their necker *shudder*

Took some pics of mine. I've never had it accidentally release, though it does release kinda easier than I'd like. Been rockin' this setup for a couple years. Also makes it easy to get on and off without taking off my hat.

Gutted paracord, folded through the eyelets and whipped together with one of the inner paracord strands.

Remember....safety first!

I use one of these for my neckers..

..get in trouble, just chew your way out..

But seriously, I think Maus has the best solution. Cheap and effective. Great idea Bearded German Rifle Man..

You guys crack me up, haha!

Granitestateofmind that is an awesome setup, in my mind I was thinking a buckle would be uncomfortable, but that looks smooth the way it's made!

It's pretty comfy. The gutted cord seems to put less stress on my neck and I don't even notice the buckle. Also the leather on the skin side is nice. Of course, after I modded that 11 I had to make my own sheath, as it didn't fit into the stock one anymore. Still, you could adhere some moleskin or something to a stock sheath....
