I had a safe maker 2 a few years back as a back up. It was razor sharp, well made, and looked great. It was also made in Japan. Cold steel has a new version with 2 differences. It's vg 1, and made in tiawan. I've since lost my old model. Question is, knowing the use of such a blade, is the vg 1 really worth the extra cash?

Guess it all depends on what "use" you are hinting at.

As far as for pushing it into biological materials...steel doesn't matter.

I found that VG 1 held an edge in abrasive cutting tests significantly longer than AUS8. Since I do a lot of such cutting, it would likely be worth it to me.

But AUS8 is an excellent blade steel and Cold Steel's subcontractors do a good job with it.

I suspect that you may be mistaken. The CS Safe Makers are made in a factory in Mino City just north of Seki Japan. They used to make the Aus8 models and I believe they will be making the new VG1 version.
While Taiwan factories often use Aichi Aus8 imported from Japan, I believe Takefu does not export their
top sellers VG1 and VG10.

I suspect that BladeHQ might have the information wrong on their site.

As for Aus8 or VG1 on a push dagger as others have pointed out due to the design and purpose of a dagger, push type or otherwise, the steel type really doesn't matter.

I read "made in Japan", and made in tiawan" on amazon, so I could see if I made an error. I know vg1 is generally agreed to be the better steel; my worries were birthed from the fact that taiwanese knives, for me at least, usually did notarch up to the fit and finish of a japanese, german, or American blade. The steel type is more of a crazy ocd ish thing.
