i have a 2009 21 large , bought new sat in safe, now i want to use it for edc but grease dryed out cleaned it but action sucks, was cleaned and lubed by another person that knows the knives , still not right very hard to open not smooth at all.. open for suggestions

Pics of the steel surfaces after cleaning? Don't forget to look inside the inner part of the bushing that rotates on the pivot, might have missed a lot of gunk there which would be affecting the action.

Check that it is assembled correctly as well and that there are no pinched washers.

My thoughts also. I have pinched a washer or two or three myself, it's not hard to do, right? Come on help me out here guys. :-)

I believe the bushing itself does not rotate, but rather, is held stationary between the scales.

What kind of grease/lube was used before storage? Do you see any kind of rust/pitting?

Might want to take some really high grit sandpaper like 2500-4000 and just very lightly brush the mating surfaces if you see pitting. (two or three strokes)

All else fails a quick trip to CRKland will smooth it out no doubt.

I just pulled a 2008 out of the archives and it was smooth as glass, but I did notice that the washer took on an imprint, I see it did it twice, probably because I took it out a few years ago and opened and closed it a few times.

Every time I've experienced a stiff action after cleaning it's been the result of a pinched washer. I say have another go at it.

The times you pinched the washer, did you assemble it using the handle first and add blade assembly, or the "sandwich" method? (Just curious)

I've managed to do it both ways. Some of us are just good like that. I assume it was pinched washers as they worked perfectly after reassembly. FWIW I now assemble the handle first and then insert blade and I haven't had any trouble on my last few attempts.

The tolerances are so tight that if you assemble the handle first, you'd have to work to pinch the washers. If the washer is over the bushing when assembled sandwich style, layer by layer and tightened you can put the smallest little dent on the inside of the washer in effect making the washer thicker and consequently making the knife stiffer. Most times use will work it smooth.

I took mine onto a ceramic stone and when I polished it I could see the high spot where it was pinched as being shinier than the area directly adjacent to the pinch. Now I'm not tellin' you to use a ceramic hone to smooth it down but a fine ceramic hone will remove the least amount of material from the washer there by taking longer to really screw it up. ;) :)

Is it recommended to remove the CRK grease for long term storage? Have others had issue w/ grease drying out..
