Safe Queen.....Why?

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding safe queens.

Let me start by listing my (current b/c it changes) knife EDC rotation:

Stretch CF
Centofante 3
Endura 4
Sebenza - small micarta
Benchmade 960 silver not red

Now, I have a Spyderco Volpe, numbered, never used or carried. I love it. Should I put it in the rotation knowing it will get scratched and banged up in my pocket?

I realize that 3 out of 4 of those knives were more money that the volpe but there's just something about it. It's elegant. I can't bring myself to carry it.

Tell me I'm stupid so I can carried it? Or your actual opinion would be good too.

My Safe Queens are knives that will increase in value or at least hold their value. :)

I don't really see the purpose of buying a knife and not using it, but to each his own. I never sell a knife unless I just plain don't like it, and thats pretty rare. Since I don't sell my knives, I don't care if they diminish in value over time. I expect them to. JMO.

An unused knife is a sad knife.

If I was you, and wanted to carry it... I'd carry it.

I enjoy using my knives just as do most people here, sure that first ding/scratch may hurt a little, but its a lot better than seeing it die in your safe "un-loved." If you think it may go up in value, your probably right. How much? Who knows?

If your going to "queen" it, to sell later... I'd say knives are not where you should be trying to flip your money.

Enjoy your knife how you want, seems like you want to carry it... So it's an easy choice :)

Another way to view it is this: when you croak and your wife's new husband gets your knives, do you want them to be nice and shiny for him or all beat up?

Ok, maybe the answer is to have one to carry and another one just like it to look at.

new entry in me last will and testament " Bury me with my Knives so my wife's new husband can't use them. And my TV too"

You said it. :D

If I don't use a knife, it generally means I don't like it and therefore I generally get rid of it.

You might just find that you like your Volpe that much more when it's covered in the battle scars of everyday use :p

If you're really woried about it getting dinged up in your pocket you could get one of those pouches that goes inside your pocket to prevent that. I don't much see the point in spending a lot of money on a knife I'll never use.

I tend to like my knives more after they've developed some character. The only reason for safe queens for me would be for investments, or saving them for my kids. My knives get used.

This statement is pure awesomeness.

I love to see all the Busse, Sebenza, etc guys on here sell their stuff "never carried, never used", etc. Why bother buying a sweet knife if you aren't going to use it? If you use it, and want to sell it or pass it on to a friend or family member, at least you can give thee buyer your opinion of the knife, or you have a shared experience of carrying the same knife with someone you care for.

I have a friend who put his Les Paul up for sale that he had played for most of his adult life, and it ended up going to a collector that doesn't even PLAY guitar. He had to sell it, but was sickened, knowing it would be in a case until someone was willing to shell out some stupid amount of cash for it years later...probably to STILL be left in a case.

If you aren't going to use it, then you just a voyeur, IMO.
I don't own more knives than I will use regularly.

That's an absolute travesty! :barf:

I only buy knives that I intend to carry and use. YMMV

Does the unused knife have more value to you if it's kept new and un-marred, or if it shows evidence of use?

Is it really going to be a superior using knife than the ones already in your rotation?

Can it be easily replaced if lost?

Some things to think about...

I have quite a few knives that don't get used. They're not really safe queens, I doubt I'll ever make any money from them, even if I do sell them. Therein lies the problem. I simply can't bring myself to sell any of my knives, even the ones I don't particularly have any use for or don't even like that much.

Sometimes I'll take one of them out of the cupboard to play around with or look at or show somebody or something, but then it goes back in the cupboard and my usual four or five EDC knives continue their rotation.

As an example, I have a BM 806 D2 with the black blade. Nice knife and I quite like it, but it's just a little too large for my EDC purposes. I've been told I can probably sell it for more than I paid for it, but I can't sell it. It's in NIB condition, as it came from the factory, but there it sits. A quandary.

If you don't want to carry it and ding it up just don't. You have other knives you can carry and it seems like you have a solid rotation so don't carry the knife you want to keep pristine. I have no problem with the idea of a keeping a knife as a safe queen. I have a few myself. There's knives I just know I'll never carry because of how rare or beautiful they are. There's other knives that I buy on a whim and they just never find their way into the rotation.

I don't see why safe queens are a problem as long as you have other knives to use. For me I use a Tenacious and a Drifter as my EDC, but I keep my BM Nagara in pristine shape never even carried. Sure it can be used but I think it's beautiful (also discontinued)and want to keep it that way. I flip it, clean it and show it off to people but that does not categorize me as a voyuer since I still use my others. There's nothing wrong with having the best of both worlds.

The Volpe is too nice a knife not to use. It looks great, carries well and the N690Co steel takes a wicked edge. I use mine for dress occasions (new jeans) and any time I feel like going upscale. Of course, the above is easy for me to say because I bought a backup. :D
