Safe Queens - Traditional

I have a lot of knives but only a couple safe queens. For the most part I just can't stand to have something I'm not using and enjoying in that way as well.

I do have this ironwood Viper that became a safe queen. I lucked into the chance to grab it at retail and I loved the ironwood... however I already have a stag Viper I've been carrying and using for years so I figured I didn't NEED to carry this one and I'll just keep it nice. I still find it hard to not throw it in my pocket sometimes though.

I also have a storage/safe queen jigged bone English Whittler I have as a back up to my user. I ended up loving that knife so much I knew I'd be using that thing a lot for years and years and I wanted to have a spare in case I ever lost it, broke it, or wore it out.

Oh and I have a PPP 15 TC Barlow that HAS been carried but has become a safe queen once those shot up to crazy prices. It's got a tiny bit of patina on the blade but other than that it is near mint. Luckily I recently scored a nice TC 14 that I have no qualms about carrying.

Pretty much everything else I own are users. Some are more light duty users than others though.

Oh and I HAD an ebony One Arm Razor 85 safe queen but I traded that for a Texas Camp Knife.

Those are some beauties, Man!

I propose we get rid of the term "safe queen" which for some reason I have never warmed to and replace heretofore with " Their Royal Majesties" ....I know its a bit unAmerican but "safe queens" is too girly...who coined that term anyway?20221120_084201.jpg

I'm the exact opposite. I have a ton of knives and can't stand messing up a pristine knife when I have a couple dozen users that are already covered in "character" marks. Most of my knives are safe queens that are never used and only occasionally handled. I do get a lot of satisfaction just owning interesting and quality blades though. It's a collector thing......

No safe, hence no "safe queens".
I believe that with the exception of two of my four Rough Rider "Riders Of The Silver Screen" series moose, I've carried and used all my knives at one time or another. Those four equal end moose, are pretty much "Shelf Kings". I admit I bought them with displaying them in mind, more than using them.

The funny thing is I can 100% understand your side of the coin too. I absolutely DO NOT need to have 300+ users and often think "maybe I should just keep this one nice".... but then my brain also says "but they're so much fun to use and I bet this one will look great with patina!" lol. Honestly I think my biggest downfall that makes me use most of mine is I have a super eclectic collection, I have very few doubles or similar knives, so when I get a new one I'm excited to see what it does and doesn't do different from my other knives.

I try to keep a spreadsheet of my collection and I denote my "safe queens" on that sheet as "Museum Piece."
