I finally decided to pick up a safe so i could see what this "safe queen" phenomenon is all about. I had noticed that my battle mistress was looking at me with disgust after removing her from my file cabinet, and can only think it's the result of her wanting a safer place to sleep.

The safe will be stored in my shop. I'm wondering if the weather changes will have any effect on my knives? will they rust in the safe? etc.

I coat them with a gun cloth and such, and I plan to get some marine tuf cloth soon. I just want to make sure they are going to be "safe" in my safe.

any advice or tips would be appreciated.

thanks

I would recommend you use a Goldenrod or similar electronic dehumidifier in your safe too.

Also, consider the biggest safe you think you will need and buy one even bigger - you will thank me later :D

Plus one on the goldenrod. You can also buy products of various sizes to draw out any moisture most can be recharged by simply putting i'n oven. I have a larger one of these and in10 years have only had to recharge it once. I think remmington makes one that you plug into an outlet to recharge so i expect it does a little more then the other ones. Also prducts out there that release vapors and coat items i'n safe. Some can harm documents and or other materials so you have to be careful with these. During the hunting season where I am constanlly using guns, knives and other gear I store i'n my safe I usually use some of these as a third backup to prevent rust. I have the brownells
Version. I think their called blocks or something like that.

Get a bigger safe for sure. Fire rated (mine is rated at 1500* for 45 min) and secure it to a concrete floor with red head anchors. A climate controlled environment would be better especially if you're gonna keep natural handled knives or wood gun stocks in it but I bet g-10 and micarta could handle temperature changes as long as you keep the humidity down in the summer.

thanks for the advice! I had no idea there was so many options for dehumidifiers. I appreciate all the help!

+1  I sure wish someone would have told me this before I dropped $1000+ on my safe.....it is packed full after only a year or two.

Yeah... save up for the biggest one you can fit where you are going to put it and make it a one time deal is some of the best advice given about a safe. After all, a really good safe can be passed down with all of the rest of your family heirlooms like your knives and guns.

The oven recharged dehumidifiers work great without the need for electricity or wires running into the safe.

Especially since you said it is going into a shop which I assume is not near where you sleep my earnest advice to anyone that wants true peace of mind would be do not skimp on one that can be pried/hacked open in under 3 minutes with a Busse but instead buy the Busse of American made safes.

Of course you might need a forklift to place a really good safe though. :o But so will the bad guys instead of doing something like this video shows. Yeah, the video has a few shortcomings like whether your safe is bolted down, recessed into a wall etc, but it also proves you get what you pay for on the intitial product since that wouldn't be happening with a 1/2" thick plate steel door that will barely fit a credit card in the gap. Any safe where the door has rolled sheetmetal looking edges and a 3/16" or larger gap will perform like the one in the video. ;) Also, the fire rating on the cheap (think under the $2000 range) safes is usually not very accurate. Insurance adjusters with a few photos/stories can be very valuable resources for safe related knowledge and no I am not nor have never been one, but I did do some extensive research.

That thing is huge but where are the fire/smoke seals? :p

Check them out, I have an Executive Model Safe, older model the newer ones are super nice, I want to buy a new one on a few years just because I have moved so many times and I have a few nicks on it.

wow. that giant safe might as well have access controls on the inside since you could sit in it :)

While its a good idea to buy the biggest safe you can right away.
I also believe in getting a few moderately sized ones.

I believe in 'don't keep all your eggs in the same basket'

and of course anchor the thing.
