Like many here I have the happy problem of having to many knives to be able to ever use them all. The question is, Is there a product to use to prevent corrosion, rust and stains on blades while storing them? If so does it work on both SS and Carbon Steel? Thanks for any information you care to share.

Threads on this topic seem to draw many suggestions.

Personally, I like RustFree from A.G. Russell.
It's inexpensive and very effective.

But there are other good choices.

Hi,

Cougar Allen, Mr. Moderator, I'm sorry to hi-jack the thread on something unrelated, but something has been puzzling me. Why does the cat in the truck come up in some threads?

I just don't get it. I'm not slagging you off or anything, just genuinely puzzled:confused: (see the smiley face agrees with me);).

What's going on? If anyone else cares to enlighten me, please feel free.

Apologies to the OP, consider this a free bump by way of compensation.

Cougar, moves threads when they have been accidently posted in wrong forum.
He uses other trucks also, but this is the latest.

got a couple of nice leather sheaths made for my busse blades (not stainless, better, imho) by chuddybear. i asked him how to store my knives (okay to store in sheaths). he said just to put light coat of oil, and it was okay to store inside the sheaths. he also said to check on them every month or so and maintain them. if used, clean blade and sheath, let both dry out completely, apply oil and back in to storage. been doing it for 4 months now and no problems. be sure to keep a dehumidifier with knives (silica gel packs). recharge dehumidifier as neccesary. i live and play in hawaii (humid, sometimes wet, and surrounded by salt water [pacific ocean]) and this seems to work for me! also use same procedure for my crk's, kiku's, hattori's, kanetsune's, emerson's, ranger's (both ss and high carbon steels).

I use a combination of mineral oil and beeswax. Shave some beeswax into mineral oil, microwave for a bit, and the beeswax goes into solution and stays there. Alternatively, vaseline petrolium jelly. Both work, last a long long time, and are edible.

I start by cleaning them. Sometimes with soap and water and/or a scouring pad (brillo), sometimes with a Q-tip, cigarette lighter fluid and/or wadding polish. Then I lubricate them, usually with mineral oil, and wax the blades, with some kind of car wax that contains carnuba. Then I roll them into rolls sewn from microfiber shop towels, and store the rolls in boxes with silica gel packs.
