Got a question that I hope someone here could help me with. I'm new to stainless steel water bottles. Is it safe to put 'em over a fire to boil water in? The new ones that weird smell inside and now I wonder if it'd be toxic to do so.

Thank you.

Many of the bottles do have a coating on the inner surface. You want to cook that out first. After that you are good to go.

if it has a coating, than no do not boil. otherwise its ok.

could u tell us what brand you have? maybe post some pics?

cheers

Don't own one yet - that's why this preliminary post. It seemed like there were dozens to choose from at Dick's and Target.

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

my personal favorite is the kleen kanteen. many like the guyot/nalgene all steel bottles.

the kleen kanteen is lighter so thats why i like it.

Gotcha. Can one boil water in either of the ones you recommend?

Thanks.

Yes, the plastic caps can also be removed so you can pretty much just toss it in a fire without worrying about it.

The advantage to the guyot and nalgene bottles is that they use a standardized size with a standard lip size, of which filters and accessorys can be attached to. You can also fit the gsr glacier cup nestled around the outside.

Edit: goddamn it, I'm late for my 1000 post giveaway.

ANother option is to find a metal cup just big enough to slip over the bottom of your water bottle and boil in that, and keep the bottle for fresh water only.

thats what i do, i use a nalgene plastic bottle with a gsi steel cup. works great.

Sure. I already have two of the GI style canteens and while seaching for the metal cups... I realized that maybe going the all-steel bottle route might a little more efficient.

Thanks.

I agree and plan on picking up an all steel water bottle soon as well. I don't like to use those small metal GI style canteens I'd rather just boil it inside the bottle. More water and less to carry (items wise not weight). Anyone want to post links for good prices on good brands? was thinking of checking out an REI later this week. I would pay extra for an all titanium one.

I don't know if that is more efficient. You boil water in your bottle, you still need a cup or small pot for food prep or to drink out of. The heated bottle needs time to cool before you stick back in your pack or can drink out of it. Often times you only want to boil a cup of water for tea, 1L, and you might not want to boil your whole water supply.

Personally I think the GSI cup + bottle is a better route. If you choose a GSI cup and SS-bottle you have more options which is always good. I'm willing to be most people cook their meals in the GSI when they have both with them.

Not that I'm frowning on the whole SS-bottle thing. However, I think its one of those items that appeals to the survival mindset but isn't really all that much more practical outside the 'need' to boil water in your water bottle.

87 - thanks for that.

Would anyone out there have a good source for the GI metal canteen cups?

Thanks!

Can someone post a picture of the standard mouth Steel Kleen Kanteen or Guyot? Also the steel mug that nests with them? I check GSI's website and my sources and cannot find the one someone mentioned.
