First-time poster, long-time lurker her. Also, first-time folder hobbyist.

I just got a Camillus Heat from ebay and noticed there's no safety lock for when the knife is closed. I was a little disappointed with that, as I'm not comfortable having something like that in my pocket. Maybe I'm just a newbie and it's not likely to happen, but I don't like the idea of the blade popping open by accident.

Now, I have my eye on the Camillus Dominator. Does anybody know if it has a safety lock (for when the blade is closed)?

Also, what's the justification for not designing a safety lock? Other knives seem to have them.

the Dominator also does not have a safety.

i do not believe it is necessary in the DDR design as the spring is stiff enough to keep the blade closed.

just my personal bias, but safeties on knives only belong on single action out the front automatics.

I have had a Heat for about 5 months now and carry it every day. I have had no proplems with it "popping" open, when I carry it by the clip in my pocket or a reqular pocket carry. I like the knife.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a nice knife no doubt. I guess I'm just a little paranoid. I can see most of the time it's not going to happen, but I'm just concerned on those strange scenarios when it gets snagged

I don't care for spring-assisted knives without safeties. The safety on those Kershaw Leeks is actually useless because it's at the wrong end of the knife to use.

I had a Heat. It's the exception because the spring setup is a little different and it actually holds the blade closed. Leeks kind of just barely stay closed.

Darrel explained to me how the spring and cam work on this knife. The way they engage int eh closed position actually acts as a safety. A little test to demonstrate. Open the blade up so it is sticking out of the handle a bit, the tap the side of the knife on the table. The shock will cause the blade to be drawn back into the handle. This works out to the break point of the cam. You can feel the break point when you open the knife with two hands. Very slick set up.

While everyone has their own point of view on tip up or tip down carry, safety is one of the considerations for Camillus AO's to be tip down. They feel it is better to have the point of the knife down in case the blade does fire. Camillus has been in business for a long time and has done their homework on this, so I can respect their choice.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'm just a little too paranoid after all. However, I'm prone to an occasional spontaneous spurt of sporting activity (quick basketball one-on-one, or pseudo sparring), where I might not empty my pockets if it's not an extended activity.

Nothing is "fool proof". But I think you will be surprised on how well the Heat is put together. Like I said I have had one for about 5 months now and it is my every day carry, and I am a very active person, it has never opened on accident. You will like the knive.

I have both knives and have never had a problem with them going off in the pocket. I use to carry the dominator for a long time and found thta it did not seem to need a safety.

losangeles, I felt the same way about this line of knives. Trust me, after getting all three, they are fine to carry and all of mine have been solid on lock-up and I don't worry about carrying them.

I just got one of the new rescue heats!

WHOA~ Sweet
It has a seat belt blade and glass breaker!
Orange handle
