Hello Gents,

I need some help here...
I'm planning to buy my first DE, been browsing for a while and I narrow it down to 3 choices...
Edwin Jagger 89L, Muhle R89, and Merkur 34C.
now, if you guys have to pick, wich one would it be? and why?
I'm open for other suggestion as well (but let's keep it under $70).

thanks

I recently got a Muhle R89 and I love it! It is, however, my first DE razor, so I really can't comment with authority about how aggressively it cuts and other performance factors compared to other razors. Obviously, others here can guide you better than I. If I'm not mistaken, the Jagger and The Muhle have the same head (head design?) and are three-piece razors whereas the Merkur is a two piece design. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm learning :)

The EJ89 and Mühle R89 both use exactly the same heads. The only difference is the handles (as is the difference between the EJ DE89L, "Barley," and all the other EJ DE89 variants.)

I have the Mühle R89, and it is an extremely smooth shaver. The only downside is that the handle can be a little bit slippery when wet. It's not a big problem if you tend to keep your hands dry on something before making your strokes.

I cannot compare to the Merkur 34C. This one is a two-piece razor. Everybody says great things about it. Personally, I have a Merkur 23C, which is my daily shaver. It's more on the mild side, but I like it a lot. The 34C is supposed to be more aggressive than the 23C, but I'm not sure how it compares to the EJ/Mühle x89.

You can't go wrong either way. You might like to get both and then sell the one that you like less.

I started with an EJ89L and its a great place to start. It is a middle of the road razor in the way of aggressiveness and very easy to learn with. As I progressed I moved on to vintage Gillettes and gave my EJ away to a friend that was starting out. Even though I lean more towards the more aggressive razors now, I still miss my EJ and often think of buying another.

I haven't tried any og the others you mentioned, but they are amongst the most recommended razors for people starting out so I don't think you could go wrong with any of them

Thank you for the replies guys, I do appreciate it. I thing I'm going with the EJ89L for now.

best regards

As I've posted elsewhere, my Merkur 34 is a very good razor, close&aggressive. What's not good is the quality of the plate, it's flaked off leaving rough parts. What's worse, Merkur has a 2 year 'limited' warranty now, food for thought....

My other Merkurs, 44, 38 Barber pole and the Traveller are however, fault free.

last minute change of heart.
it's a Muhle R41, gentlemen...and it's not for the faint heart. A very agressive razor, but once you tame it. it's all good close shave.
