Hi all
Glad I was able to find this section of BF's. I've been using a Gillette sensor excel since my early 20's (I'm 40 now) without any problems. It finally broke about 3 months ago.
I can't find anywhere that I can purchase a new handle. No big deal, I was thinking of getting rid of it anyway. But DAMN....the price of razor cartages Now!!?? So I've been using cheep disposables till I figure out what I'm gona do.

Part of the problem is that I shave my head too, so I go through cartages like mad and these newer 4-6 blade razor cartages DO NOT give a "better, Cleaner" shave at all. But they do dull really fast and cost twice as much.

When I was about 32/33 my hair line decided it can't keep up the fight and retreated. It's now living comfortably on my shoulders, well back from the front line. A little too comfortably I think as it seems to be having somewhat of a baby boom, forcing it to advance ever southward, setting up small communities in sporadic (And even exotic) locations over the vast virgin terrain of my back. So I said to hell with this. I grew a goatee ( which I have to color black because it's almost fully grey) and shaved my head. You wouldn't believe the complements I get from family and friends on how much better I look. I even get scoped out by women at the grocery store (or it could be that I've got a Junglas on my hip). My wife even made me cancel my Face book account because too many exgirlfriends are finding me. some were getting a little aggressive (one even emailed me nekid pix of herself...And NO you can't see them, I already deleted them).

My question is to you guys who also shave your head. What safety razor do you use? I'm kinda leaning toward a Merkur Futur because it's adjustable, but haven't made any decisions yet.

I don't shave my head but I can tell you the Merkur Futur is one fine piece. I love mine.

Yea that's what I've been hearing so far, that it's a great razor.
I just don't want to spend $70 and find out it carves me up like Christmas turkey, and winde up looking for something else

Ok I pulled the trigger.
Merkur Futur is on the way. Should be here in a couple weeks.

Well the good thing is that if it turns out that it doesn't work for you, it is a good enough razor that you would be able to sell it and get most if not all of your money back.

I you find that the Futur is too aggressive for your head even at its lowest setting , let me know. I just got 2 vintage Ball End Techs, very mild razors, and I don't "need" both of them. I may be able to part with one for the price of shipping.

Thanx for the offer Gumbi
I'll give this Futur a good couple of months, if I'm still having trouble after that I may take you up on your offer. Thanx again!!

So the Futur arrived yesterday and I had my first shave with it today (had a couple days growth cuz I knew it was going to arrive soon).
There will be a bit of a learning curve with this, but I took it slow and had no problems. Only one cut and I usually get cut there anyway.
Did a fine job on my head too. I had it on the lowest setting for the first shave, I'll mess around with the settings as I become more familiar with it. (heavy)
One thing I do like is that it's double sided, I'm going to mark one side that I'll use for my head and the other for my face, just to take some of the guess work out of it,
as shaving my head with a dull razor isn't nearly as painful as shaving my face with a dull razor. so I may be able to get a couple extra head shaves out of the side I used for my face after it gets too dull.
Thanx for all your input guys!!

I've been thinking of trying one of these out for a while and have had a bunch of stuff in my cart at fendrihan for a couple weeks now.

This is what I came up with:
Clubman Jumbo Styptic Pencil $6
Razor Blades Sampler: Derby, Astra Platinum, Astra Stainless, Black Feather, Dorco and Precision $22
Proraso Shaving Cream, Eucalyptus and Menthol $9
Merkur HD 34C Double-Edge Safety Razor $43
Classic Super Badger Shaving Brush & Stand, Faux Ivory Handle $50

Am I missing anything? $150 seems like a lot of money to spend all at once on shaving though, considering I only shave like twice a week.

you can get the soap at Shoppers for about the same price, but since you are ordering any how and have met the free shipping why not save the few cents:p

I started with the same blade sampler, that 60 blade will last a fair amount of time if you can use all the blades. I couldn't use the Derby or Feather blades no matter how much I tried. I also have the same brush, but I didn't get the stand. I don't know why I keep referring to it as a Silvertip, but it is softer than the silvertip I have.

The only thing you don't have on your list is some sort of aftershave treatment, yet you may already have that. If you look at the list there are 2 items that add up to $93 so with the other stuff you should be set for a few months of shaving daily. Well more if you average out to 3 shaves per blade daily shaving would be 6 months. You say you only shave twice a week so you have years of gear there, try to that with cartridge razors and canned goo for under $150:D

The blades are really cheap, that's the huge advantage of a DE razor. Also the second edge is so you can cover more area before rinsing.

The place I listed sells razor sampler packs as there is a lot of variation between different blades. I like the Isreali-made Crystal blade, $12 for 100 on a 1949 Gillette SuperSpeed. But I have different razor heads that prefer other blades.

Is the aftershave necessary? I've never used it. My wife's also allergic to perfume so anything scented is banned from my house.

It is not necessary but helps your skin after a shave. There are unscented balms and other things to use. Some people use straight rubbing alcohol, others use witch hazel. before buying anything take your wife with you and make sure that it doesn't cause her allergies to act up.
