Safety Strips/ talk to Sarkis.

Some time back we talked about how the wooden HI Chainpuri scabbards without leather coverings had strips of brass lengthways along spine and edge of scabbard in addition to the 3 circumferential rings and brass tip on scabbard. It seemed possible the sarkis could hide longitudinal brass strips under the leather of the usuall scabbards for an added safety feature.

Perhaps you could persuade the sarkis that as brilliant and intelligent as we customers are, we do not use the wonderful tools they make on a daily basis, and sometimes do dumb things. Maybe if you told them that a bad cut of our hands could mean several days work lost for us that could otherwise be used saving toward another of their khukuris... VBG

I know you love them Uncle Bill, but just maybe I'm starting to understand them a bit, too, from your stories.

I think that if Bill would write a book, along with his photo's it would only further our understanding of the kamis and I agree with you on gaining just from reading the posts. Or even a travelog (sp) video for those of us who are unable to travel there to pay our respect to these artisians.

Rick, this forum is gradually becoming that book, whether Uncle Bill keeps trying to dodge doing it or not.

Howard gleaned the info in the FAQ's and put it up;

John Powell is a collector with access to British museums;

I shouldn't have started this because now where do I stop? Sonam grew up following a Gorkha Colonel father around India, Arvind had family member's whose lives were threatened in the division of Pakistan...
There really is person after person reading this forum who knows just a little bit that nobody else in the world ( or very very few ) knows. It is AWESOME!

Way I feel is that there are no experts on this forum: the most knowlegeable in these areas are beyond being "expert" to being advanced serious hands-on students. In the khukuri world, these people aren't just heavyweight wrestlers, they're in the sumo wrestler class.

If I weren't so egotistical and unafraid of looking like a jackass because I've already stipulated I'm one, I'd be scared to post myself. Hurry back safe, Uncle Bill!

Uncle Bill:
We had also talked at one time about a "tab" being sewn onto the back of the scabbard down low for use as a place to tie off a leg strap.
I don't recall who suggested that, but many of us thought it was a good idea.
I had forgotten it until Rusty made this post.
Will you bring this up with the sarkis?

Twas me, ¥vsa. If I recall correctly, it was a thread dealing with various scabbard improvements.

The tabs are a go but we are too late to get them on current models going out. Look for tabs to start appearing in April. The sarkis can't solder so the brass strips may be a no-go. Problem is sarkis live up on a hillside a half day heavy duty walk from he shop -- a walk I simply could not make so could not visit the sarkis but they came to see me and did a little work here in Anamnagar so I got a few pix. Kamis would have to make brass strips for the scabbard which would then be put on by sarkis and then leather. Logistics are formidable!

Refer to my thread on how to get a khukuri out of the scabbard! Best I can do right now.
