Sage 1 and G10 Dragonfly - comparison photos

I've had my Sage for a little while and just love it. But at times with slacks I felt it was a bit heavy and largish for light EDC needs. So I researched to find a little brother for the Sage.

After too many days of reading, thinking, comparing... I finally decided on a G10 Dragonfly. Needless to say, as reported here many times before, the fit and finish of the Seki-City Japanese-made G10 Dragonfly (as with the Taiwan-made Sage 1) is impeccable. Fit is absolutely perfect and oh-so-tight. As you would expect for the price. Great materials - VG-10 blade, G10 scales. And very light weight - just 2.2 oz. vs. the Sage 1 at 3.4 oz.

Here are some comparison images to give a good sense of scale between the two knives and in my (semi-large) hand.

I think these two knives make a great team.

Thanks to those of you who helped me make these choices... I'm thrilled with the knives, which each arrived razor sharp!

Your photos are stunning and good luck with the Dragonfly. I too was looking for a little brother to my Sage and settled on the Cat. Although nowhere near the F&F of the Sage, I am totally satisfied with it for the price. Some tender loving care will bring it close to the Sage in overall quality. I think Spyderco did a great job overall with the liner locks on these guys.

How stiff is your g-10 dragonfly? mine is significantly harder to open than my FRN g-10 dragonfly.

freedoom... I don't have an FRN version to compare mine to.
It's stiff, but probably as expected from a lockback design.
Even as a lockback, it's flickable with a sharp thumb flick
and a touch of wrist thrown in for good measure.

Probably best opened with a sweeping motion of the thumb.

Thank you... I'm glad you appreciate the images.

I think your choice of the Cat is a good one. Great materials for a great price. I'm not far behind you in getting a Cat for myself! Best wishes to you.

They do make a nice pair. I was to cheap for the g-10 version but isn't it amazing how the dragonfly fits your hand like a larger knife. The FRN version weighs almost nothing. I cut off the pocket clip and just drop it in my pocket.

It IS amazing! Such an incredible design the Dragonfly is.

Sounds like a great way to go... I can only imagine how featherweight that FRN version feels at <1.2 oz. - like thin air, practically! And at that size and virtually no weight, I think ditching the molded clip and dropping it in the pocket is a perfect solution. (Makes me want to order up an FRN version too! ;) )

I've read here somewhere that Spyderco plans to update the FRN Dragonfly this year with a wire clip, jimping, and more! Yee-Haw! Nice move, that will be.

my g-10 dragonfly isn't flickable in any way shape or form. i don't mind but it just seems abnormally stiff.

I do like your taste in knives, the dragonfly and sage are two of my favorite designs.

Yours is probably a lot like mine. To flick mine does take quite a snappy thumb flick
AND a flick of the wrist. Definitely best as a thumb-sweeper! ;)

What an awesome knife, eh?!

Great pics. Been following you ever since you did some GP-100 shots at THR. As for the blades, one simply cannot go too far wrong with Spyderco. Pic a design then sit back and enjoy.

Hey Bob... small world we have here on the internet, isn't it! Something about great guns, knives, flashlights... yep, we guys have some cool stuff to get involved in and share with each other here on the web. Nice to see you here, old friend. I need to get back and spend some time on TheHighRoad and S&W forum again.... I miss my old friends there. I still have that wonderful 3" GP-100. I need to dig it out of the safe and heat it up a little! ;) I'd visit the 1911 forum as well (where I lived for years) but there are a couple of mods there who couldn't see past themselves and bumped heads with me one time too many. Power got to their heads. So I don't visit there any longer. Some great members that I miss there, though!

You're right about Spyderco. As you indicate, I think you can pick any of their offerings, sit back, and enjoy. I recently bought a Tenacious which I ~hastily~ felt I wouldn't give much use to and sent back in exchange for the G10 DF. But in hindsight, I wish I had kept it AND ordered the G10 DF, because even the Chinese-made Tenacious is a marvelously nicely made knife which would serve very well indeed. (I will either order another Tenacious or upgrade to a Para or a Manix).

I was more drawn to Benchmades at first (and I still love and buy them too), and must say that it took me a little while to get past my initial visual disconnect with Spyderco designs. But soon I came to find that the Spydies are every bit as compelling, if not more so, in some cases. They just make some very, very well done, rocking knives!
