Sage 1, Spontaneous Detent Roughness… so confused

I have Sage 1 that I've carried for the past month. It has seen little use but has been flicked and played with a bit. Just today it started developing an extremely rough action around where the detent ball leaves the detent hole. The blade needs a somewhat firm pressure to even get it to close now. Ive fully disassembled and cleaned the knife, made sure there wasn't some sort of gunk in the detent hole. everything. It becomes rough again on the first opening. The detent ball is clearly now rubbing the blade and scratching it… i have no idea how. completely clean… been used for a month flawlessly. HELP!

cleaned again… perfect for the first two openings, start to feel a little grittiness then the damn thing just starts to seize up… mind currently exploding

I do take back the first comment about the detent ball scratching the blade… looked with a magnifying glass. theres obviously a worn path on the blade from the month I've had it but there appears to be no damage. the detent ball is also smooth when looking with a magnifying glass

Put a drop of oil on the detent ball/path. It wil smooth out the action considerably in my experience.

liberally applied oil. it fixed it. Ive never had to do this on another knife before… I just can't figure why after i cleaned it the action WAS fine and then became awful after opening it a handful of times.

It probabily had some residual oil left makin it smooth then when it finally started to wear away and start getting rough you cleaned it and removed the last little bit making it even worse.

Just keep it oiled, having only used it for a month its probabily just now getting broke in.

I concur. Ball bearing detents some times take a while to get fully broken in. This is true where they travel across the surface of the blade - and also where they "ramp up" onto the blade. On some Spydercos (I'm looking at you, Terzuola Slipit!), the ball bearings never fully break in and always feel a bit stiff. With others, it can take a few weeks or months to get fully seated and in a groove...

I had the same problem. I found that the detent ball was not round. I tried my best to make it round and polished. It now is smooth as silk but legally is considered a gravity knife.
