Sage 1 vs. Chaparral

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a good Office EDC. I already own the Sage 1, and while I really liked it at first I almost feel like it's a bit too bulky now. I've been carrying my Delica for a few weeks, and when I swap it out and carry the Sage it just feels chunky in comparison.

With that said, I'm considering getting a Chaparral to replace, or at least supplement, the Sage. I'm mainly just looking for something thinner. So I wanted to get some thoughts from folks who have owned both. Pros/cons of each. Also, I'd really appreciate if anyone has some side by side pics to compare.

Thanks!
Eric

Own a Sage 1 and 2, both fantastic edc knives
Sold my Chaparral, but is is an excellent knife for something smaller than the sage.
Fit and finish on the Chappies are outstanding, if you want a smaller liner lock, the Cat g10 is a less expensive option or a Dragonfly 2 for a smaller version of a Delica
Any Spyderco in your pocket is a good choice, take a look at the Techno, its a little big knife, in fact quite a little beast.

Love the Chaparral. It's my favorite "three inch class" folder. The 2mm blade makes it an amazing slicer, and it's so thin that it just disappears in my pocket. Couple comparison shots with the Sage 1...

Thanks for those pics! It looks substantially thinner than the Sage.

I know you're looking at the Chaparral, but wanted to mention that the Sage 2 is noticeably thinner than the 1.
It's thinner, but still a good bit thicker than the Chaparral. Sage 1 is .440" thick and the Sage 2 is .403", while the CF Chaparral is a mere .345" and, if you want super thin, the titanium Chaparral is even thinner, at .312".

I've had both and I found them both to be very clumsy and bulky in the hand. If it were me in your shoes, I would go find a Ti Damascus Delica and call it a day. Nishijin Dragonfly 2, Spyderco Air (I liked that one a lot), Centofante Memory, Des Horns out of the Spyderco lineup. But I'm also not a fan of the wide leaf Spyderco blade. I've had a bunch and none of them fit the bill for me.

For me I like to use a simple slipjoint at the office.

The Chaparral is probably exactly what you are looking for OP. I prefer it to the sage series for edc. It carries much better and is still big enough for my light duty uses. Great ergonomics too.

The Chaparral is a nice office knife. The Cat is about the same size and cutting edge and is very inexpensive. Someone mentioned the Ti Delica. I love the Delica 4 so the Ti might be a good choice. The FRN Delicas are not much thicker than the Chaparral and are very light weight. Any of these would be good choices. The Delica is the most usable.

One thing about the Chaparral as compared to the Cat, is that the Chap is so thin it is sometimes uncomfortable when doing any heavy cutting. The Cat, though with lesser steel, is just enough thicker (not much) that this problem goes away.

Thanks Deacon for those measurements, and thanks everyone else for your input.

Now just looks like I need to find someone willing to trade a Chap for a Sage 1 :)

i own the sage 1,and its a real nice liner-lock knife for the office, but have you though about a native 5 in G10 as i think its a amazing mid-lockback for places like a office setting!like the chap, but a little beef'er/stronger lock up to,just my thoughts.

The Chaparral was designed to be a gents folder sized for the office and for the future. We are and will be making this pattern in a variety of handle materials in a effort to provide the user with some thing that would be close to his/her preference.

Sal, thanks for taking the time to reply! Looking forward to what you guys have coming!

Just scanning this thread, I didn't notice the steel mentioned. XHP is one of the best stainless steals IMO. I can't really offer suggestions on size though as the Sage is just barely big enough for my taste.

I'm waiting for the FRN lightweight. ;)

It's sounds like the Chaparral is just what you're looking for.

I prefer the Sage 1 for my large hand, but if you're wanting something a bit smaller I think the Chaparral would make you happy.

My cf Chaparral was the second Spydie I purchased and for going on 3yrs years has been my office edc and most carried overall.

I'm working on one, but it is challenging to do what I would like to.

I was more than half joking, but I will buy one immediately if they ever become available! I actually really like FRN and the lightweight series in general and the Chaparral is a personal favorite!

Thank you Mr. Glesser!
