I'm interested in buying a Sage 4 for my friend who is not a knife fanatic. I decided on a Sage 4 for its simplicity and durability. Anyone own a carbon fiber or Ironwood handle Sage 4. If so, which would be the best buy. He works outdoors quite a bit.

The Sage 4 is the lockback version with ironwood slabs and titanium bolsters. The Sage 1 is a Michael Walker linerlock with carbon fiber scales. Of the two, I like the Sage 1 better.

The Sage 1 is quite a bit less expensive versus the Sage 4. The Sage 1 has a flo-thru design (open back) so that you can easily flush it out in the event it gets dirty/muddy/gunky (the Sage 4 is a closed design). I think the Sage 4 is a better looking knife. I once owned a Sage 1 and liked it a lot. I have neither owned nor handled a Sage 4.

It gets a little confusing, so I didn't want you to waste time trying to find a Sage with a backlock and carbon fiber scales. I just found the 4 a bit heavy and pricey for my personal taste. They are both good knives, and a royalty sized portion of the sales go to Alzheimer research. Having recently lost a friend to that terrible disease, it is a cause I am happy to support.

Both are great but the 1 is lighter and the action is much smoother/easier. I have both but the 1 sees far more carry. It's cheaper too!

I have a Sage 2, and it's the only one I've kept from having 1,2, & 3. But then, I'm a titanium junkie.

Yep. Thinner, lighter, better slicer, but less likely to stand up to the way non-knife people tend to treat knives. I have one in my pocket right now.

I have owned both and definitely prefer the Sage 1, plus it happens to be much cheaper. The Sage 4 is actually the only Spyderco knife I have returned. It just feels too heavy to me, and the ironwood is not a particularly attractive wood IMO. The Sage 1 is one of the best all-around folding knives I have ever seen, and honestly I would be hard pressed to argue that I actually need any other folders.

Thanks for the replies. I decided on the Sage 1 for the price.

Great knife. I'm sure he will love it. It's one of my favorite knives to carry, and a great bargin for such a great knife.
