Sage 4 - what's it going to be?

Has anyone heard any news on what the Sage 4 is supposed to have for a locking mechanism or build materials?

Since they're dedicating each Sage to a designer, I don't know of too many folder locking mechanisms left (outside of liner/RIL/Bolt-Action) other than back-lock or compression-lock, but with the Native 4 coming out with a bushing system and a nice smooth back-lock (and very similar overall shape to the Sage), I would think they would do something other than a back-lock.

I am excited for the next edition to the Sage series as I've now decided to get a Sage 2 and a Para 2 (mostly to try out a Colorado-made Spydie and the Compression lock) while I'm waiting on the Native 4.

As boring it would be compared to the other sages, I would like to see just a simple black g10 handle with a liner lock and the traditional s30v blade.

I'm hoping for compression or ball bearing lock with either peel ply CF or foilage G10. I would say they would do a lock back but then the sage would be wayyy too close to the caly 3. Ball bearing lock would be sick. Like a mini manix 2.

Far as I know the plan is still for a Mar/McBurnette midlock with an Al Mar style long bolster.

I see that its already been discussed over on the Spydie forums - I may have to go register there.

Thank you so much for the info.

I also think a sage with a ball lock would be pretty cool also I wonder what maker this sage will be about.

I think a Sage done in a tribute to McHenry and Williams would be 100% awesome.

I don't care too much what kind of lock it has as long as it is not in some funky color. That's the thing that kept me from buying the Sage 3. I just don't like blue or orange or red or yellow, etc. on my knife handle.

Same here -- the Axis is definitely an iconic locking mechanism. I'm sure getting Benchmade to license the Axis for use on a Sage -- and even if they were amenable to doing so, agreeing on the specific terms of the arrangement -- would be a fairly big hurdle, though.

Another locking mechanism that I'd love to see on a Sage at some point is the Hawk Lock.

I believe it is going to use the front lock and Al Mar style bolster as mentioned above. It doesn't tickle my fancy. I'd love to see a plain black G10 and compression lock.

Micarta is too flexbiel to use on a Folder without Liners, so I think a Liner like the Sage1 will have to be mandatory if this material were to be chosen

I know there is some really nice Micarta out there

YVW, FWIW, it has been discussed here as well. More than once in fact.

Sal also mentioned that the ball lock was the only Spyderco designed lock he was not completely sure would be able to fit in the Sage platform. That was quite a while ago, so they may know for certain by now, one way or the other.

Take it you never handled a C54 Calypso. Spyderco stopped doing unlined micarta for the same reason they stopped doing unlined G-10, issues with clip screws ripping out. Had nothing to do with flex. The wire clip seems to have solved that problem, as witnessed by the unlined G-10 UKPKs, so it might place unlined micarta back on the table as well.

I have never had the pleasure to find a Calypso in person, so you are right.

However, it's my understanding that G10 and Micarta material flexes when they are thin. Around 3/16" to 1/4" and there will be no play

I suspect that the Sage 1's liners are thicker than the Superleaf's and has less "bend-ability." It looks as if the G-10 and Liner on a each side of the Superleaf adds up to 1/8" and very noticeable flex on some places

It's not a big problem to me but I'd prefer a Spyderco without such play

i think that an emerson sage would be cool.
a ti liner lock with g10 scales and a wave opener

That's my bad man, my search-foo must be weak since the upgrade to the message board - I seriously attempted searching for it. Maybe I'll have to go to google's site-search for this place too (other forums I visit regularly who recently upgraded to Vbulletin 4.1 also seem to have lost a step in searching).
