Sage 4

I don't see Benchmade ever licensing the Axis lock to anyone else, let alone their biggest competitor. There was a legal poo storm when Benchmade used the Spydie hole on the Dejavoo, and that's just a round hole.

My bet is the Sage 4 will be a middle lock, aka lockback.

Isn't the Axis lock exclusive to Benchmade? I have a Mini-Griptillian and I'm pretty impressed with the Axis, otherwise it's pretty dangerous closing one handed:cool:

Why is it dangerous closing it one handed? It should be safer because your fingers are not in the path of the blade like on a liner/ frame lock knife.

If that is the case I guess the ball bearing locks are also dangerous?

I don't know if they would ever license the AXIS lock or not but I believe they licensed the design to SOG and their Arc lock because it is so close to the AXIS lock. I should probably put my flame suit on but I see the ball bearing lock as being more similar to the AXIS lock than the arc lock.

I'm thinking we may be lucky enough to see the CBL version (no Axis lock needed), which would be a fine model indeed. Cannot wait !

Like all other patents, the one protecting the Axis lock will expire one day. That day is probably about five years away. After that, anyone can use it. Am sure if Spyderco decides to go that route, they'll credit McHenry & Williams, who designed it.

I'm thr OP. just got back from work, and realized my stupid mistake. The Sage 2 just came out, and what I am interested in is when the....Sage 3!!! is coming out. My apologies for silly errors, and does anyone have any sense on when the next version will be coming our way?

Again, my apologies. Any insights on how this works?

The Axis lock uses the same principle as the ball bearing lock. Personally, I think the ball bearing lock is a better design, so why do we need the Axis lock when Spyderco already has something similar, if not better?

Regarding the Sage 3, I've heard it's going to be the Blackie Collins bolt action lock. I don't know when it'll be released.

Seems like a lot of manufacturers want to do their own take on the spring-backed lock idea. Axis, BBL, Arc, Hawk, and I'm sure there are more.

It may look that way, but they are totally different. The Axis transfers load from the tang to the liners through a crossbar held in contact by a pair of Omega springs. The Ball lock tranfers load from the tang to the backspacer through a steel ball held in contact by a pair of concentric coil springs. The Axis pretty much requires liners, the Ball does not.

I'd guess the Sage 3 is at least 6 months out at this point.
