Trying to decide between these two and looking for some advise. Pretty much settled on the cf so its just a toss up between the blade steel. Thanks for the help:D

What are you doing with it, and how do you rate your sharpening skills?

just for an edc, it will not get worked very hard. As far as sharpening goes, haven't really done much but plan on getting an edge pro before I get the knife.

A few of the major differences as I see them and none relate to the steel.

First, the Caly3 is thinner, slimmer and shorter. Not by much but enough to make a diff. in tighter pockets.

Second, due to the sage's larger size, it's comfortable either using the choil or not, whereas the Caly3 feels best to me when using the choil only.

Third, the locking mechanisms are different, if you like to flick out your blades, the Sage is the way to go. If you like a solid click and feel you get from lock backs as well as less of a chance of accidental opening, go with the Caly3.

Forth is price, I got my Sage for $86 delivered and the Caly3 for around $110 delivered.

FWIW, I carry the Sage more but could never get rid of my Caly3 CF especially for those smaller pockets. Oh, and I'll also be getting a Sage2 if that tells you something.

I have and love both.
Your main choice should be which lock type you prefer: a linerlock (Sage) opens quicker and because of the open construction it is easy to clean the knife. A lockback (Caly 3) can in principle better handle heavier work.
Ergonomics on both are quite comparable. The deeper choil on the Sage may be slightly better but on the other hand the blade of the Caly can be guided slightly easier in my opinion.
I don't have them to hand but the Caly is if I remember well slightly thinner.
Both steels are excellent. ZDP is even harder than S30V but can get a very slight patina over time.
As I stated above, the main difference will be your preference for a kind of lock.

In addition to the excellent points raised, also take into account the weight. While the Sage is larger, the closed SS construction of the Caly 3 liners, even with the holes drilled into them, make it somewhat heavier than the open-construction Sage. Whether or not that's a pro or con is up to you. I personally prefer the Sage, partially because I prefer S30V over ZDP-189 and partially because the twill carbon fiber feels great, but mainly because of ergonomics.

i have the framelock sage. i can get that bugger razor sharp, i can shave my head with that thing!

Don't know if it makes that much difference for you but the Sage can be taken apart whereas the Caly 3 cannot.
