Sage Series Detent

Hi All,

I have had a Sage 1 since around September and I love it dearly. It is my suit knife (generally an EDC) and I use it mostly for tasks around the office and whatnot, the knife has not seen any hard use (I save that for my fixed blades).

Ever since I got the Sage, I have developed this terrible habit (when I'm bored) of opening and closing the knife. More than I few time I have flicked it open, but most times I just use my thumb on the thumbhole for a low speed opening.

Anyway, the knife is getting broken in, but I noticed the detent has become somewhat weaker than it was the first few months I had it. At one point last night it seemed like the detent was barely working.

Has anyone else experienced this reduction in detent in the Sage series, or am I just over cautious and paranoid?

Try a Sage 3, then you'll know what a weak detent really feels like.

I've experienced a reduction in force to overcome detent on quite a few knives, but rarely nothing more than what I would consider broken in and smoother. :)
If you completely lose the detent that is a different story and you should probably be looking into replacing the detent ball if it is a liner-lock.

There was a somewhat similar thread over on Spyderco forum recently... and coincidentally I just had one of my older PM2's apart and the detent ball had a bit of a flat spot on it. I wish I would have taken a picture of it because it was visually flat. Yet still it has a plenty strong detent to not be concerned about unintentionally opening.

The detent on any Walker or Reeves lock is a just relatively shallow depression in the blade tang. You might want to try cleaning it, because it wouldn't take a huge amount of crud in that depression to reduce blade retention.

Maybe you have some gunk or lint in the detent hole that's preventing the ball from seating properly.
