All,

What would people recommend for a sailing / diving / white water rafting knife? It would obviously need:
- Excellent corosion resistance;
- Grippy handle, ideally brightly colored;
- Partially serrated blade.

Benchmade makes a nice looking BM100SH2O in H1 steel.

Thanks,

JD

For a fixed blade the 100H2O would be ideal . We have them on our inshore rescue boats (thanks to me ;) ) They have held up well to the marine environment so far..

If you'd consider a folder there is the Spyderco Salt in H1 and the forthcoming Endura-sized Pacific Salt.

Yup, get a Benchmade 100SH20 with the yellow handle...It was made exactly for the uses that you have listed.

For a folder another vote for the Spyderco Salt. Its a Delica with a rounder tip and EXTREME rust resistance.(H1 like the Benchmade)

I second hardhearts suggestion. If you are looking for a folder, David Boye is the way to go.

As a side note, my first open-water scuba dive in Monterey, CA we found various equipment lost at the bottom of the ocean. Furthermore, our instructors collection of dive knives consisted primarily of knives he found while diving/giving lessons in northern Cali.

So word to the wise be careful what knife you choose to take in the water with you for more than just corrosion resistance don't take any knife you wouldn't be sad to have strapped to some other guy's BC in the future.

Oh P.S. I took my old school Spyderco Delica with me on my first scuba weekend stuffed in a BC pocket, rinsed the salt water off at night and it never had any problems with dirt or corrosion even with my repeatedly bouncing off the ocean floor. Perhaps not the best choice but I have heard several divers carry them.

But don't tell my girlfriend that - I'm trying to get a benchamde H2O rescue hook and a Mission K&T MPD out of the deal...

Hey Joss,

Benchmade makes a nice looking BM100SH2O in H1 steel.

I think that looks like the perfect choice right there. The sheath is supposed to be very secure and the yellow handle will be visible if dropped in the water.
I also seem to recall a forum member testing the knife by sealing it in water for several weeks and it didn't rust at all. Sounds like a winner to me.

Actually, I don't know if this is allowed, but a fellow forumite has one for sale that he is trying to get rid off. SixFeetDeep. He is a great guy too and won't hesitate to answer any questions you have about the knife if you want to get a first hand opinion on it, just send him an email, tell him VultureParade sent ya :)

Here is the link, check it out.

I'd go with the David Boye as well. Yellow FRN handle, fully serrated (the serrations are excellent for cutting line, not nearly as aggressive as Spyderedge, which is too deep) sheepsfoot blade. The blade simply will not rust. Period. Non-magnetic, won't screw with your compass. Titanium clip and shackle to keep it on you, and the marlinspike is incredibly handy to have around. Can't be beat. I think that actually my 3 cents.

I bought the Benchmade yesterday. I like it. I think it's far superior to a folder for everything other than sailing. The handle is a bit small, and the thumb grip/filewrok is too aggressive, IMHO, especially with wet hands.
