Ok, ok sorry for the clickbait title. But its not completely untrue and I do have a good hack for the newer Cadets bushcraft related.

At some point Victorinox updated the file on the SAK Cadet to a much more useful file. The bonus being that in addition to being a better file it also is a champ at throwing Sparks off a fire steel. I personally hate having the spine of my Bushcraft knife super sharp and much prefer to use anything else to strike for sparks. And since I always have a Cadet on me I am in luck.

A few photos in the link of the old vs. new design and action shot.http://imgur.com/a/V9NCvKt

Left knives are new and the right older.

Why not carry a BIC (or a Zippo for when its windy) and a small plastic bottle of Zippo lighter fluid, and be done with it?

If for whatever reason a lighter is not an option, a flint and steel works better than any ferro rod and knife spine I've ever seen.
(either way the lighter fluid can speed things up considerably. Especially when it is raining or (pardon my language) snowing (sorry) and your dry kindling, cotton balls, char cloth, feather stick, or whatever, isn't so dry no more.)

In my case the firesteel is 1 of many options. Although I like to build skills and do things with simple/well prepared shavings and kindling; I'm not above or ever without a modern way of making fire or (cheating with few gasoline soaked cotton balls).....:p

Sorry to go off topic but I know someone who was burned over 40% of his body using gasoline soaked cotton to start a fire.
