SAK Can Opener

Just got back from a trip in the wilds.

Friend of mine needed a can opener, so I passed him my Wenger. Couple of minutes later I hear, "This thing works great!"

I look over, only to see he is using the large blade to sheer through the metal of the lid. Damn. The thig has a can opener built into it!

The first words out of my mouth were something like, "WTF are you doing? There's a f*****g can opener in that f*****g thing!"

Oh well - only a few minor chips in the blade. Don't get me wrong. I've used a knife to open cans before. Just not the blade of a knife that comes with a can opener! I guess the moral of the story is hand the knife over with the can opener already out.

P.S. Sorry for the foul language.

Not everyone is a dumb@ss like your friend. I would have been angrier than you that someone I would consider a friend didn't know SAKs have can openers.

I have lived in 3rd world countries for long stretches at a time and the can opener on a SAK has really come in handy (also the bottle opener).

Oh, he's no dumbass. We're talking about a 40 year old American Indian who likes to do things "the hard way".

Most people don't have a clue. I lent a SAK to a guy at work to open a can. I did open the can opener blade, but he had no idea how to use it. You should have seen how mangled that can was.

Yeah they do work very well when used properly. I wan't pissed though. It was more of an amusing anecdote than a rant.

I wish to apologize that I called your friend a "dumbass". Not my place to make that judgement since I do not know him.

-I'd still be pissed, although I'm kinda surprised that the slippie blade didn't close and cut him while he was sawing at the can.

That's why I don't let anyone use my tools, even my SAK. If anyone needs something cut or opened, I'll do it. Good story though.

Wait a second, still not clear on whether your friend knew there was a dedicated can opening tool on the SAK or not. If he didn't know - oh well. Just have a laugh and let it go However if he did know and decided to use the blade anyways, then I'd be a bit irate.

Your friend could be, at least, just a little bit curious about many blades in the SAK.
Well done, well used foul language.
Best regards.
Pancho

PD: I use to do what TrickyVic does.

Ouch. You're right. You should have opened up the can opener and then watched while your friend puzzled over it for about ten minutes. :p

Roger That!

After seeing the way that friends whom I trusted with my Snap On tools treated them, I stopped loaning anything to anyone.

No worries my friend! I guess the post appeared as though he was an ass, but it was more like he had a sardonic grin as he said, "This works great!"

Unfortunately, he DID know it was there. My reaction was sort of like, "Why? (add swear words here)" It was more lack of respect (grain of salt time) than ignorance.

next time you and your friend go into the woods keep YOUR sak in your pocket and give HIM the can with the PULLTAB on the top, just show him which end is the TOP

So your friend knows SAKs come with can openers, yet he chose to use the knife anyway.
a. Stupid is as stupid does.
b. He has no respect for your property.

I just have to laugh.....:D
Good thing most saks are not too expensive....
everybody should know you dont use a blade except last resort....
next time give him a p38 and let him use that;)
