If a cork is really stuck tight, then the knife can be used as a lever to give a mechanical advantage. On a knife like the Vic Waiter, which doesn't have an awl, this puts a lot of force on the liner at the fulcrum point, and it can be damaged. (This happened to my Waiter.) If there is an awl, such as on the Vic Spartan, the force is on the awl rather than the liner, which should protect the liner from damage.

Thanks for posting that, I'd never considered doing that. Only opened a couple of bottles in my time. I don't know about the Waiter but on my multi-layered SAKs the liner next to the corkscrew is hard anodized.
