I've been reading on the internet about SAK modifications, and was wondering if it was possible to take the red plastic sides off of the knife without breaking them. I want to take my SAK apart and look at some different mods. I then want to put the red plastic sides back on the knife.

If that is possible, how do you take the red plastic sides off the knife, and put them back on?

I have read that once you pry the cellidor scales off they will not stay put if you try to press them back on. You could probably get them to stay with epoxy or something. You could buy new scales and press those on once your mod is finished. There is a guy here on this board that goes by "Cold Fusion" that is planning to CNC custom scales and sell them.

i've been able to take them off with carefully sliding a razor blade between it and prying it off. The small sak i took apart had its scales held in by some adhesive/ glue.

It isn't all that hard to remove the scales and put them back on securely without adhesive. The scales are held on at three points. Take your time feeling around and pry around those points carefully.

To put them back on, align the scales then tighten the whole thing firmly but gently in a padded vice to press them back into place.

If you manage to break the attachment points on a scale you can always use adhesive to put it back on. Various forms of epoxy work fine, but I recommend "Goop" instead. It can be removed, kind of like rubber cement, if you decide to do further modifications.

Finally, you can buy replacement scales from several on-line dealers if you really manage to mess up the ones you have.
