I have a co-worker who's wife is about to have their first son. He carries a Victorinox everyday because of the pliers. He's told me me would love a SAK with pliers that wasn't so thick so it could be pocket carried. My question is, what is the smallest (thinest) SAK made that has pliers? I'd like to pick one up to give him as a gift to celebrate the birth of his son.

thanks!!!!

What about the mechanic? Looks like a Super Tinker with pliers instead of scissors.

I'll check it out to compare with the one he's belt carrying now. Thanks for the info.

Another possible solution would be the excellent combination of a Vic. Soldier or Pioneer and a tiny model 4WR Vise-Grip in the other pocket. The tiny Vise-Grip is superior to the SAK pliers in several ways, and the two tools in combination are unbelievably versatile. Just a thought for you to consider.

There are some interesting Yeoman variants out there also, but they tend to be very uncommon. Scibeer could build one of these pretty easily out of a Mechanic and a Waiter.

I wonder how thick this is when compared to a Mechanic.

Not a lot. One layer, so maybe 1/8-3/16th inch? You could feel the difference in your hand, but I doubt you would feel much difference in your pocket. I have that knife so I can measure it for you if you like.

Note that the plier layer is thicker than a regular layer -- a plier layer equals about 1.5 or 1.75 regular (knife, scissors, bottle & can opener) layers.

Not to derail here, but does this fellow not like Leathermans? If it's pliers he mainly wants, the Leatherman pliers stand above the SAK pliers IMO.

He wants to pocket carry the knife. His problem is he has too much stuff (worked related not ninja) on his belt already and wants to move some stuff to his pocket. He currently carries a Mechanic on his belt and uses the main blade and pliers on a regular basis. If he could have his way, he would have a SAK with a big blade, pliers and nothing else.

Short of a special built one, that would probably more money than it's worth, the Mechanic is as thin as he'll get with pliers.

He should deviate from SAK and look at the small Leathermans. I carry a Squirt on my keychain. I also carry a slippie joint too - today a Wenger Patriot SAK, super slim 2 blade.

Well, we have no idea how good it is actually going to function since it got pushed back to the first part of next year, but what about the Leatherman Skeletool? Full sided pliers, knife blade, stubby driver, bottle opener/clip. Not to mention a pocket clip for slim pocket carry.

It should be readily available by February.

I'm waiting for these myself. This might be a nice alternative for him. Good suggestion. thanks!

He could get an old Leatherman PST (slimmer and smaller) and do pocket carry pretty well. Those pliers would be heads above the Vic pliers.
