Hey guys. I'm looking to upgrade by SAK Explorer with new (better?) scales and a pocket clip. Doable? Source(s)? Pics of yours?

I would LOVE micarta or G10 scales, and I don't mind spending a few bucks if they're out there to be had. Suggestions?

And adding a pocket clip has almost become a must; in the summer I wear pretty baggy shorts and the weight of the Explorer makes the pocket flop around uncomfortably. Thoughts?

Thanks for your time!

You might contact SwissBianco at:

They do a lot of custom work on SAK, but not cheap for what you're thinking of.
Maybe a belt hook, carabiner, etc might be better than a pocket clip???

I used to carry an Explorer Plus in a belt holster. It was an open top, drop in holster for a Fenix AA flashlight. There may be other minimalist belt holster options as well. As for scales, consider also the sapphire and ruby flavors. Not "up scale" per se, but a nice change from the standard red.

Alternatively, and you may not want to do this (because the Explorer Plus is may favorite as well), consider downsizing to a smaller SAK to eliminate the floppiness and need for alternative carry options.

It's not an upgrade from an explorer but if the clip is more important there are a number of options I know of.

I'd recommend Bob Lessard, HERE, a guy on the forum who is customizing aloz saks, pick you tool line up, and he is doing pocket clips now to. but, of course, it's pricy and there are some tools you can't get on an alox sak (like tweezers and probably the cork screw is out.).

I've seen a lot of folks putting a clip forma cheap folder on saks before, there are ways of making it work and is cheaper. there's also the Nite Ize eCLIPse clips which seem to be pretty popular as a cheap pocket clip mod.

TEC do some good little clips (that clip to a SAk's ) ring but let it dangle in the pocket as well.

I've used both the nite ize and the TEC clips and both work very well. The nite ize clip is pretty thick imo though.

This is the non-locking clip, using an adhesive strip gave me pause but they seem to work okay
