I appologise if this has been covered, but for some reason the search function craps out on me whenever i search for more than one word at a time. :(

I realy want a SAK. A pair of SAKS in fact. The only thing I have that even close is the worst POS clone ever made; its so bad that the blade wiggles if you shake the knife a little.

Iv checked the SAKS out at Wallmart and Meijers. In addition to not having the models i want, i noticed that the tangs of the blade and the joint spines are rounded off on the corners; this is true off all models i could observe.

Are the Super store versions different than the regular swiss models? I have heard similar things about the Wallmart natives.

i know its a slip joint, so im not expecting cement-like lockup. I hate blade play, and i just want to know how much to expect.

Im interested in a Soldier and a one handed trecker if that makes a difference.

Thanks guys!

I have the Soldier model.. built like a Tank! That is one nice knife. Never had a problem with it. I take turns EDC..ing that & a Queen Sodbuster. Get the Soldier, you will never regret it!

The SAK Soldier is my favorite. Very, very solid, great walk/talk and the finish is excellent considering how much it costs. Before mine broke in a bit, it was chewing up my fingernails.

Yipes... you must have gotten a real tight one but, thats good! They do loosten up some with use as all slipjoints do. Mine is doing great after 5 years of use.. never go camping without it!

Mine was made in '93, will be fun to see how long it lasts. I expect it will still be ticking along 20 years down the line.

OK, im sold on the soldier.

Anyone speaking up for the one handed trecker?
Just got back from looking at one. Issued to the German Army since 2003.. I bet thats making the Solingen boys real happy..heheheh! To be honest.. for a European Gov't to do this strange thing it must be a pretty damm good knife! The Germans are pretty picky on what they issue to their troops. They have undoubtedly tested it to the limit & found it satisfactory for issue. I would go for it as the price is not unreasonable. I only question the use of the saw.. I dont really know what it is good for?::confused:

I saw a surpluss store with some of those! Unissued one-handed Victorinox Treckers with OD grips and supressed logos. Forgot the site though. :(

If I did not already have the Soldier I would get a Trecker & might get one now anyway! Even though I can't see much use for the saw, it has all the other goodies on it! Be careful where you buy as there are inferior Copycats out there!

Both the Victornox Soldier and the One-Hand Trekker are different from the regular 91mm red plastic handled versions.

The Soldier has a thicker and slightly bigger blade - AND the slip-joint action is noticably harder/firmer - please see this side-by-side comparison review thread -

Victorinox Soldier v. Wenger Standard Issue

For more details of the Soldier/Pioneer blade - also check out these threads -

Twisted SAK blades?

Victorinox Farmer

The One-hand Trekker is a larger 111mm SAK with a Locking main blade -
it's still basically a slip-joint - but there's a locking mechanism that prevents the blade from closing.....

With my Wenger Handyman blades and other Victorinox models, I get as no blade play really. Of course if you push down on the spine too much it will fold, being a slipjoint. Saws are useful too. :)

You should check out www.sosakonline.com you'll find some articles, reviews and Tim's store. Tim has great prices, he can hook you up with any model you want, has great service and your money goes to charity!

Yep, check out sosakonline.com for lots more info.
You certainly can't go wrong with a One-Hand Trekker. SAKs are built with better fit & finish than nearly every other knife you'll use, and despite their low cost, are amazingly high-quality tools.
Go ahead and get one. They're not that expensive, so if you don't like it you can practically give it away to someone who will appreciate it.

saks are probably the most knife for the money out there today. I've carried a pioneer {same as soldier except red scales with a lanyard ring} for years and haven't been able to kill it. the knives for sale at wally world are the same as the ones from anyplace else. you'll be amazed by how well they work and for how long they last. I personally only buy the alox scaled models because basically i tend to break things and the plastic handled ones seem fragile. they're not but they seem to be. later, ahgar
caution saks are habit forming, you've been warned.
fwiw i've always thought the victorinox were slightly better quality than the wenger, i've read that now victorinox bought wenger so i would think the quality would be the same. nah, buy victorinox.

A Soldier and an OHT is great. I choose a Spartan Lite and Bundeswehr (German Army version of the OHT without toothpick and tweezer). Spartan Lite complement the other for the small LED, toothpick and tweezer. A soldier and OHT will only have LED less, but you'll get much thinner handle.

Anyway, it's good enough for urban carry and some wood cutting (occassional). And my Spartan Lite happens to have slot for pin, so I added a pin (not original SAK's pin)

Note that the OHT has toothpick and tweezers, while the German issue knife does not. As mentioned upthread, the OHT can be got for $10-15 less than the issue knife, also. BTW, These knives are not small. While a soldier fits well in the pocket, the OHT and issue knife will be happier in a belt sheath.

Mr. Trooper,

After all these responses, I hardly need to chime in and tell you to get these knives. They're both outstanding.

On the other hand, I CAN tell you that the very best deal I found on the net for a OHT was $28 and change, shipped, from QVC (www.qvc.com). Looks like they've even got a sale on right now! $22.26, plus 3.97 shipping. Can't beat that with a stick.

I know, not the usual knife shop, but in this particular case, the combination of price and shipping comes out best of anywhere I could find.

Another OHT is actually the next knife I'm going to buy- I had one, customized it, and traded it away. Now I miss it.

If you're at all into tinkering, think about putting a pocket clip on it. Not hard, and makes it MUCH more carry-able. Knife is too long to sit at the bottom of a pocket, at least for me.

Go for it!

The OHT is the closest thing there is to a "do EVERYTHING" knife. I don't like the army ones as the toothpick and tweezers are indispensible when needed.
:)
