I saw this mod on YT where a guy turned the bottom edge of this flat head/cap lifter into a chisel ground edge, for opening boxes and dirty jobs that don't require a keen edge. Has anyone done this also? It makes a lot of sense to me. I have the same feature on my Nite Ize key ring tool.

I would not fully sharpen it, just get the point acute enough to tear open tape and cardboard. The guy in the video said he cut himself because he forgot he sharpened it.

I know Felix Imler did it for his Bush Craft Sak for making spoons and such

Haven't tried it yet myself though

I think the awl is already sharp enough for that task. I prefer to keep it sharp for boring holes.
Like with so many of the SAK tools, you can find multiple tasks for them :) I prefer to sharpen the owl (wich like you said, is already pretty sharp) instead of re-shape another tool for the same task as I use the owl for. If you prefer to sharpen the cap lifter, go for it :)

I just made the mod. Removed as little material as possible. The corner won't cut my finger if I push on it to open the tool. It works great on shipping tape. For brown reinforced paper tape, it takes a couple of passes to break the fibers. This is a nice addition to the capabilities of my Farmer. I like not gunking up the blade for opening boxes.
