So, if you had to choose between having a large blade and a saw or having a large blade and a small blade, which would you prefer for in a basic kit knife?
I am moving toward having the saw and blade, but not sure if the benefits of having the versatility of having a saw outweighs having an extra blade small detail blade. Of course I could always tape a small scalpel blade into the kit for that...
I plan to have a small ceramic rod in my kit also, if it matters.
Just curious what others think.
Thanks,

A saw is indispensable. I'd opt for the saw. It can be used to fashion trap triggers, improvise shelter, etc, etc.

I love saws. You can easily do certain things with saws that are VERY hard to do with a knife. You'd never catch me in the woods without at least a small saw.

until I bought a Camper model. Now that has replaced the Climber as my edc knife. Even when I'm just hanging around the house I use the saw instead of going to the shed for garden clippers. That small blade is useful too for doing fine work, like splinters. I'd suggest the Hiker if you need a phillips or a Camper if you would rather have a corkscrew with an eyeglass screwdriver. If you get the Camper, you can always use the small screwdriver on the can opener as a phillips.

in any case the large blade and the saw.
i prefer the victorinox rucksack with lock blade and use the saw very often.

Thanks for the replys.
Sounds like everyone agrees: saws are good to have. I always thought the SAK saws were the one and only best (as far as a saw in a pocket knife), but was vary happy when I found the WAVE tool's saw is identical.
Now I just need to find a place stateside that sells the Economy Lumberjack...
Thanks,
Brome

I am actually getting a Wenger Ranger model 17706 I believe, with the saw and large locking blade and can opener, etc. I think it is a great knife.
In this thread I was asking questions specifically toward a knife small enough to pack in a basic kit, only for emergency back up.
My EDC includes a large Cold Steel Voyager and a Leatherman Wave tool.
Thanks,

I carry sak trailmaster and spydie endura and leatherman supertool while hiking.

can't get it smaller than that!

While I wouldn't want to get rifd of my SwissChampion SAK, which has everything but the kitchen sink, a lot of "saw" type work can be done with a patially serrated blade, as well. I never cared for serrations until I got a BM 720 in a trade. The first test i did with that kknife was to whittle a figure-4 trigger. With an SAK I'd be forever switching from the main blade for carving, to the saw for the notches, and back again. I was able to use the 1 inch serrated section of the 720 to make all the starting cuts for the notches, and then the straight portion of the blade for clean up and smoothing out the notches.

I think the best SAK would be in the 111mm range, with the locking main blade (side lock button, not the linerlock), with the small blade, saw, file, magnifying glass, awl, scissors, *maybe* the pliers (my champion doesn't have pliers, and seeing how small the SAK pliers really are, I wonder at their effectiveness), Phillips screwfriver (mainly for use as a marlinspike), and with the corkscrew and small screwdriver. Sure, the corkscrew isn't used a lot, but it isn't an SAK without the corkscrew, and I have used it occasionally. If Victorinox amde that model, and called it the "Survivalist" or some such, I think they'd have a winner. It wold alll the tools you really need, in a size that's very handy and robust, without all the fluff. Or, I could go for a SwissChamp on the 111mm range, although that would be a monster of a "pocketknife". :~}

Wapiti:

Ok, my package in that case is minimalist: Wenger Soldier SAK.
One Blade, one very usefull awl (which doubles as small scraping blade), can and bottle openner combined with screw-drivers, flat, aluminium scaled, large loop.

This is my emergency kit, as this is the one I ALWAYS have on me.

And this still may not answer your question. :)

If you can find one take a look at the Victorinox mauser officers knife, it has two large blades as well as a saw. It's a basic sak with only seven functions/tools but out of the eight sak's I have its my favorite

i find a wire saw and a large fixed bladed knife very effective but I would agree that a SAK style saw is very versatile, I use one extensively when I was a kid its amazing how much you can actually saw with them!
