SAK for SD?

What do you say about using a SAK for self-defense? I know that without a blade lock there is always a risk of serious self-injury. However, as a last resort, could you use a SAK? Since it is legal to carry a SAK almost everywhere it is likely that this is the only blade you are going to carry whenever you may need to defend yourself. What is your opinion, would you use a SAK for SD and if so, what would be the best procedure in order to minimize the risk for self-injury? Any specific SAK which is better for SD?

I would keep the SAK closed and use it like a kubaton or fistload.

I keep my SAK on a Wenger cable chain so I can use it like a flail if needed. If I open up all the tools and swing it over my head I think very few people will bother me. I can also join 2 SAKs together with my chain I have a make-shift nunchaku.

:D :D

I had read an article in an old knife publication that suggested that a SAK could be used for self-defence, but I can't remember where I saw it. I think they indicated that the opened awl could be used for defense. I have doubts about this, as the force on any of the non-locking blades is likely to cause them to close causing more injury to yourself than your attacker. Better to take a self-defence course that trains you how to be prepared for situations. I think knives serve a purpose when used properly (for self-defence or not) but I think you need to consider the impact of your actions on yourself and the individual you are defending yourself against when you use a knife.

The only SAK that I would consider for SD purposes would be a One Hand Trekker. As the name implies you can open it with one hand which is a big help in SD situations. It also has a locking blade which is essential. Of course, no multi tool is ideal for SD. I would reccomend looking at companies that cater to the SD market such as Cold Steel. Their Voyager series is great. If you do decide to carry a knife specifically for SD, get some training in Kali/Escrima/Arnis or some other knife fighting discipline. Training will make a much bigger difference in an ugly situation than the knife that you choose.

Amusing question! But somethings got to be better than nothing. So go for one that fits the palm of your hand most comfortably. And don't make the mistake of trying to to fend off trouble with a nonlocking slip folder. If you have to (read life threatening), than pull out the awl. And that would be the ones set on the midsection of back of the blade. That rules out the Soldier/Standard models of SAK.

I get tired of folk saying a slip joint can't be used as a self defense tool....
oh-really? ever consider that if you just SLASH with it you could do damage?? just remember DO NOT stab;poke etc. and yes a SAK with that awl in back can be a nasty "push dagger" :D

In a fight anything can happen. One will not always have total control of their movements or surrounding objects. Your intent may be to only slash but you may get rushed and have the blade close on you in a clinch.

I have always held it with my thumb and forfinger "pinching" the blade and remember single-edge swords are good for non fight minded soilders because humans tend to SWING more then stab.;)
