I have been using sak's since I was in the boy scouts, and have always wondered something. What is the sewing eye for, and how does it work? Also what is the reamer for?

the sewing eye work like a sewing needle but the eye is in front. The thread goes through the eye and you punch through the material passing the thread or reversely punch through and pass the thread pull and done.

When I was in the scouts, we used them(reamer/sewing eye) for leathercraft. We made pouches, knife sheaths, and belts using our SAKs and rawhide, deerskin, and pigskin. Even the newer SAKs have them, but I doubt most people that have one have used it for it's intended purpose.

The reamer is for punching or drilling holes in various materials. It can be used on leather, fabric, wood, or just about anything else that's less hard than the reamer.

The eye can be used to push thread or line through a hole. It makes for rather crude stitching, but sometimes crude is good enough.
