...Does anyone have any ideas how to make my small Wenger more durable for keychain carry? I was thinking maybe wrap the scales in electrical or duck tape or something.

I don't think you really need to do anything to make the scales more durable. My Vic Executive has lived on my keys every day for the past three years with no problems. Weger's scales are a bit softer than the Vics, but I carry my Evo16 and other Wengers all the time in my pocket with no problems at all.

I agree that the scales are pretty durable and don't really need to be protected. They get scuffed up in the pocket, but don't break unless you drop it on concrete or something like that. Victorinox makes an Alox Classic, if you cared to go that route. They also make a small pocket sheath for those 58mm (Classic sized) tools. And you might be able to make or find on eBay a kydex keychain sheath.

I've carried a Vic Classic SD (blue) on my keychain fora long time with no issues, so has my wife. However, if I ever need another one, I'd go with the Vic Alox Classic.

Been rocking a Rambler for a while, and before that (the virtually indestructible) Alox Classic.

You could try carrying it in a key chain sheath. Victorinox make one for the classic, and I've made my own out of some leather that takes the knife a little deeper. Since I use the classic so much, I find the sheath is more convenient as it lets me just pull out the classic without unhooking anything.
