SAK knife idea

Ok friends,

I have a knife idea. I want someone to go do it, make ton of money off of it. Then give me a small % and name a knife after me. 😀. Hey, I can dream right!

I was thinking about Swiss Army knives. I like them but I want different tools at different times. I want someone to make them modular. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could switch out the tools base on what you want/need. Add or subtract tools to your hearts content. Change the color on the outside scales. Add or don’t add a pocket clip. Change the steel on the blade.

Just an idea. What do you think?

John

The problem with the idea (in my opinion) is that if Victorinox offered modular knives... They may as well discontinue the vast majority of their lineup. There are skilled makers out there who will throw together whatever SAK tool combination you can dream up though.

I like the idea but tolerances of such a modular SAK would be hard to do. Sure it was thought out by them now, tolerances would need to be exact and end user will most likely mess up when they add or subtract tool of choice with a mechanical fastener. It would be cool for us tinkerers, warranty issue with manufacturer.

There is a non SAK version of that coming pretty soon. The American Service Knife - modular set up so you can change the tool set, modern bladesteels, easy disassembly.

I'm neither a Medford fanboy nor hater, but I applaud him for giving this a go. The way I see it, the more options out there the better, and the modularity of this design is bringing something unique to the table. I don't think it's something that could ever dethrone the SAK for me, however, just because I enjoy them so much and because they give me a sense of nostalgia. The "ASK" does pique my interest to say the least, but it looks like I'll have a good while to mull it over because he says scissors are still a couple of years off.

I recall seeing a lot of kit knives with interchangeable tools all in a nice (plastic/leather) pocket folder. Some where Imperial, some German, some US, some Japanese I think?
IMHO, the reason for carrying a SAK is to have the tools you need together. I would like Vic to provide for some sort of customization of tool groups - more than currently. Like this (borrowed photo)

Here's a decent ad showing the features.

As a huge SAK guy, I'll definitely want one of the Medfords at some point in time, but I'll let them sort out the tools situation, because so far, half the ones I've seen are pretty bad. Well, not bad per se, just read as "Not what I want".
