SAK large blade

I recently picked up a SAK recruit model for everyday since I noticed I don't need much more than a 2.5" knife. Still love my Spyderco knives and carry them regularly but the SAK is very small and easily thrown in the pocket. The large blade feels rough when slicing through paper but I can't get it more polished than it already is now. The small blade took a very keen edge but I can't get it on the large one. Any tips?

It most likely has a wire edge that is making it feel rough. The SAK steel is great but a bit soft. It'd easy to make a bur on it when sharpening so that it will feel sharper when you cut one way compared to the other.

I sharpen mine with a stone then take it to a loaded strop. Basically a scap piece of leather with some polishing compound worked in.

You'll end up with an edge that is sharp enough to shave but will be slightly convexed and stand up to a bit more punishing before it deforms.

Best of luck!

^^ do what steely said...

also, fwiw, I find using a hardwood block a great way to remove wire edges, just run the blade through it like you're trying to cut it

Its funny you mentioned that, I actually whittled some with the large blade waiting for the burgers to finish on the grill and noticed it sliced better on paper. Not that paper slicing is the end all be all of edge testing but I'd like my SAK to be nice and sharp
