Here's a really dumb question.

A can opener is a given item on most all SAK's & Multitools, and is probably a great thing to have in an emergency. Call me sheltered, but I have never had reason to open a can away from home, so I've never used one of the SAK-type.

Can someone tell me how it's done ?

Is it supposed to sharp ?

Hey RH..

I use mine all the time...
Half the time I can't find the kitchen one, and usually have a SAK or Leatherman on my desk so I end up using it...

Just put it up to the edge and push down..Works nice...

Now go get a dozen or so cans of soup and practice,practice,practice..LOL

Practice is the key here.

The first time I tried, the tin lid came off looking like some strange throwing star...

I've only used it a few times. To be honest, it's one of the least used things (but very useful in an emergency) where as the bottle-openner....hmmmmm Beer!

Works like a charm. Put the hook (bottom part) on the outside of the can so it rides the rim and push down with the tip (top part)so it punctures the lid then with a up and down motion work your way around the can. I use a small fine file to touch up the cutting edge now and then but probably not necessary (I just like very sharp things) After you cut the lid all the way around and go to remove it WATCH OUT AS THE LID IS VERY SHARP AND YOU CAN CUT THE DOGDO OUT OF YOUR FINGERS! Good Luck Weldonk

I recently heard a radio interview with TV news guy Tom Brokaw who, apparently, fancies himself quite the outdoorsman. He was talking about how he and his pals were rafting and got stranded in a canyon. I don't remember the details of why they couldn't get out, but he told of how a rescue team had air-dropped food and supplies to them. He made a big point of laughing at the "abusurdity" of them dropping canned food, but no can opener. Right then, I thought to myself, what kind of nitwit goes rafting without a SAK or Leatherman, both of which, naturally, have can openers. So, whether you're an over-paid TV news hack or an average Joe like most of us, don't head off into the woods without a can opener, be it on a SAK, Leatherman or just a P-38 on your keys. You just never know ...

The only thing I will add is that the technique is slightly different for a Leatherman than it is for a SAK. After you have made the initial cut with the SAK advance the cutting edge away from you, counter-clockwise. With a Leatherman proceed clockwise. In both cases it is faster to turn the can rather than moving the tool.
