I'm thinking about picking up a Swiss Army One Hand Trekker for one of the PSKs that I'm putting together. Any opinions on this, good bad or indifferent?

For a minimal SAK, can you think of a better one?

I always have my small Sebbie with me, and will usually have my Mountaineer II, so I don't need this to be a brutally tough knife. I'm more interested in something that:

- Has a saw -- for fire starting, getting that first bit of wood for batoning.
- Has a can opener and bottle opener
- Smaller and lighter than a multitool
- I prefer one hand operations.
- I prefer locking blades.

This thing seems about perfect, although I kind of wish it had scissors. Any better ideas out there?

The Trekker should do you just fine. I opted for the Victorinox Hunter model. Liked the short curved gut blade and it has the can opener, saw, awl and a locking blade. Not one handed, but I already got a fixed blade with me that is.:D

Try to find one of the older models of SAK workmate. As I recall one of them added a sissor and plier for not to much added bulk.

I think the Trekker is a good choice. I looked at the various options and decided to get a Locksmith model. It is real similar, but is not a one handed design. I suspect the metal file will come in handy for sharpening or other chores. Also has the metal saw which in a pinch could be useful. Size is good for a knife you intend to use. Weigh is heavy for a pocket knife, but that makes for a good grip. I also would typically have another knife with me, but if I only had this one, it would suffice for many chores. I Have the SAK one handed trekker and I like it very much. It is perfekt in addition to a bigger fixedblade. The serration is only in the frontpart of the blade, so it will do all jobs you want it for.

I have been looking at this same blade, I have a Explorer model that has been with me for many years now. I think I may ask my wife and daughters for one for fathers day. They gave me my explorer years back.

The trekker is a very good all around outdoors tool. I've often been surprised at how versatile the blade is. The serrations are shallow enough that they can be used for some plain edge applications. I've been able to make a decent fuzz stick even with the serrated section.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I still can't decide. Maybe I need to buy an even dozen SAKs to help me make up my mind? ;)

lol

The number of variations out there are just crazy.

I have it, great knife.

one thing though, the lock is opposite what it should be for a right handed person, seems to be more oriented for a left hander.

I bought a few Victorinox One Handed Trekkers on sale at Target for $12.48 apiece. It's a fine tool -- my favorite Victorinox.

As others have mentioned, it is large and somewhat heavy. For that reason, it is easier to carry in a belt case or in a pack than in a front pants pocket.

Hi I dont like the serrations on the trekker and I also discorvered the edge folded over like paper on mine.

Can't say anything about the Trekker, but on my Swiss Champ I have used both the wood and metal saw/file many times. For me, any serious survival SAK would have to have these blades on it. I don't care for serrations unless cutting rope. So a plain blade is essential to me as well.

You have the right idea, get a bunch of different models and play with them, see which works best. Sounds like a perfectly good excuse for acquiring more knives. ;)

Ijust ordered a SAK Outrider, which is basically a Trekker with a scissors! It's not a one-handed opener though.
