SAK or multi tool

Hi. I am thinking about upgrading my multitool. I currently have a Smith and Wesson tool chest that I think is a first production run. It is similar to http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=13332&langId=-1&isFirearm=this.

I don't know which I would be better whether a SAK or another multitool. For the multitool I would want it to be a little smaller and lighter (especially widthwise) and have phillips screwdriver. For the SAK it would have to have a phillips scredriver. I also want to to be easy to use to unscrew screws on computer. I work with computers a lot and a multitool of some sort has been handy. The knife blade is neither here nor there because I always carry a knife with me anyway.

Thanks.

One consideration with a SAK is that most of 'em have a phillips that folds out only 90 degrees, which makes it somewhat difficult to use. A few SAKs, like the Explorer for example, have a phillips that folds out 180 degrees making it much easier to use.

Also note that some multi-tools, like the Wave for example, have a phillips that is not a real 3D phillips. That is to say, it is sorta flattened almost like a 2-dimensional phillips. Others, like the Victorinox Swisstool, have a real 3-dimensional phillips.

So just check 'em out real good before buying, so you know what you are getting.

I too can't figure out whether I like the SAK or multi better, so I just go back and and forth.

I carry a Vic Bladeless (on my keychain) in conjunction with any multitool. The tiny philips is the size I most commonly use and it folds out 180degrees. Also it takes care of the scissors option on the multitool.

Actually, the can opener of a SAK is a very effective Phillips screw driver, and it comes out the end. I carry a Vic Rambler, which has a small Phillips screw driver as well. One SAK that works well for computer repair is the Cybertool, so you might want to look at those.

Now, if you want to get a decent used SAK for less than the cost of a new SAK go here:

Scroll down to where it says "MISCELLANEOUS" and choose one from there. You can also e-mail him to see if he has something which is not listed yet. I have bought three used SAK's from Tim (Felinevet) and have been very happy with them. All you might need to do is touch up the blades, and clean them up a bit, maybe get a new toothpick too. For the money, they are great!

He also has very good prices on new SAK's too, and his prices include shipping.

Since you work on computers, I say get a Cybertool 41. I have one and it's one of the best investments I've ever made. One of the tools is a socket driver with bits for Phillips head, straight slots, and Torx. I have yet to run across a screw on a computer which I could not remove with it. I have taken apart and reassembled everything from my Apple iBook to a Nortel Passport 15000 ATM switch with mine.

The screwdriver bits also seem to fit most gun screws, too.

Excuse me while I cringe at the thought of a non-hollow-ground screwdriver being used on gun screws.

Buggered-up screws on a computer are one thing - a gun is a COMPLETELY different matter.

My favorite edc for some time has been the Victorinox Spirit multitool. I've gotten other edc knives and tools, but I keep coming back to this one. It is quite compact and robust, has a true philips that extends from the end, and a very sensible array of other implements.

I also have a Vic 111mm Outrider with a small philips the extends from the end.

I carried a Leatherman Wave with me for the longest time. No matter what else I carried, the Wave was with me as well. I felt underknifed if I didn't have it on me. However, lately I have been using a Vic Super Tinker as my only knife, and it's worked out perfectly for me. I realized I really didn;t have the need for pliers, a saw, and a file on a daily basis. I DO, however, need a knife, screwdrivers, and scissors all the time, and the SAK has those. Plus, I use the toothpick and tweezers all the time as well, so, I guess you go with what works for ya.

No need to worry. I'm with you on using the correct screwdrivers on gun screws. The Cybertool's socket bits for flat screws ARE hollow ground. Also, I've found the Torx bits fit the hex head screws on a few of my scope mounts quite well.
