Hey guys, I just received a Sak pioneer from Ed's (TLARbb) giveaway, and I must say I am really enjoying this knife. After opening some unique packaging I first thought that this knife was a bit big for my normal edc liking, seeing as I tend to favor toothpicks and peanuts. After carrying the pioneer for a couple days I think this knife is starting to change the way I think about knife size and what may or may not be comfortable in the pocket. The pioneer is of excellent quality and has a nice fit and finish to it, as well as having a nice pop to the springs upon opening and closing. Now, don't get me wrong, I still love my small case patterns, but this knife has got me thinking that maybe I should expand my horizons and pick up some other patterns in a larger size. Has anyone else been stuck on one size or style and had a specific knife change their thinking? Once again I would like to thank Ed for the very generous giveaway, and everyone else for the wealth of knowledge and information shared on this forum. -Jack

Nice pick up. I really like the SAKs with the alox handles. So far I haven't had a knife change my normal carry size. A good 3.5-4 inch frame seems to be my bread and butter. Too big and I just find the extra size useless. Any smaller and I find the knife terrible for food prep which is a main task for my knives.

Nice giveaway Ed

The Alox SAKs are a very classy carry in my opinion Jack, congratulations :)

A SAK Pioneer is a classic knife
It is robust and easy to sharpen, and should get many years of good use

I'm glad you like the SAK. I find myself with more knives in that size range than any other, so I guess that makes it my favorite size knife. With the exception that I like peanuts and mini copperheads a lot for everyday carry.

The Pioneer has a very nice main spear blade and a good handy tool set. It should make a pretty good work or utility knife for anyone.

Glad it made it to you without problem.

Congrats, Jack! Great knife and one of my absolute favourites! Classy enough for a suit, casual enough for jeans, trimmed down to the most useful tool blades with nothing in excess, large enough to be comfortable in hand, small enough to be comfortable in pocket... the list goes on and on! If I wasn't such a knife-knut, it would be the only knife I would ever need or want.

I've posted this photo a few times already, but what the heck, here it is again because this thread needs pics! :D

PS--Great giveaway, Ed! Clearly, the prize went to a good home...

I like to carry the Pioneer cause I think it is a perfect size to accompany my Rambler. Sometimes I take my Salt 1 with or without the Pioneer. Great SAK! :)

I love my SAK Pioneer. I'm carrying my SAK Cadet today, along with another small folder, but quite often I find the Pioneer is enough.

I think quite a few people that carry knives don't realize how useful the other tools on a small SAK can be. I may not use them every day, but I use them several times a week to fix things around the house (usually something that my one of my kids has broken :p), replace batteries, or do small prying tasks.

Great giveaway (very generous!), you're a lucky man.
If you like the Pioneer, hurry up and get yourself a Rancher - they just quit making them. Same knife, but a hawkbill blade replaces the can opener/small driver: and no key chain attachment stud to dig into your hand or leg. My all time favorite SAK EDC!

Pioneer is a great edc, I love mine, seems to be the right size and tool set for general carry. The awl is real useful.

I bought that same knife a few months ago and had the same reaction! I couldn't believe the quality of that little knife. Thanks to all the praise for SAKS here on the forum, or I may never had bought one. I had no idea. I thought SAKS were those cheep muli-blade I had as a kid...I'm still playing with it.(the knife).:D

The pioneer and old soldier are the basics of what you'd find on a camp knife. Because the pioneer (camp knife) is an equal end and a decendant of the cattle knife is the main reason I like it. And I am a punch-bladeaholic.

Very nice, you have to love the Alox SAKs. My personal favorite is the Wenger SI. It's got the same exact toolset as the Pioneer, but a bail rather than the keyring.
