Hello all,

I am new here and have a few knives already. However, the only SAKS in my house are rusty or belonged to my Grandfather.

So I convinved my girlfriend to come with me to the Swiss Knife Shop in NH which is conveniently located exactly 27 minutes from her house =)

I love the look of the Vic Cadet, especially in copper, but I'm not sure if the make that color anymore (Do They?) . The one problem I have with it is that it doesn't have scissors ( I need a knife that also excels in nailcare haha )

So I found the Compact because it has a nail file (am I correct on this? I've read conflicting reports?), my Question is, do the toothpick and tweezers and screwdrivers and such have a tendency to slip out? I am fairly active and that is my one fear about this knife. Honest answers greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Person.

If you carry it in a watch pocket or in a belt sheath or slip sheath it should be fine. If you carry it dangling from your belt with time and use they might.

The compact does contain a small nail file on the back of the parcel hook.

Some people have reported loss of the tweezers, toothpick, pen, and pin, but I have never lost any implement from the scale of any SAK (Victorinox or Wenger). You may have a different experience, but I put my Swiss Army Knives through regular use and I have never had a problem.

As far as a knife which excels at nail care is concerned, you may want to look into the Wenger Swiss Clipper or Wenger Swiss Clipper AT. The knives are about the size of a Victorinox Classic although they are thicker. The tools contain toothpick, tweezers, a nail file, a pair of scissors, a nail clipper, and a knife on the regular model or a eyeglass screwdriver on the AT model (AT = Air Travel).

The Mountaineer may be the version you want for EDC. I've carried SAKs for years and have lost two toothpicks from the picks slipping out due to loose scales. Other than that, I don't even worry about tweezers or toothpick as they stay snug; no matter what I'm doing. Hope this helps.

Been carrying one or another Vic for twenty years and never had a problem with the toothpick or tweezers coming out. Even if you lose one they are easy and inexpensive to replace

I've carried them clipped to tool pouches , never lost toothpicks or tweezers . Anyway they are easy and cheap to reaquire . of the two models you are talking about , I would pick the Compact . Copper Cadets are somewhat rare . For an allround EDC , I would rate the Compact more highly .

The Compact does have a little nail file on the hook, but I find it not very useful for nail care, it's too thin and will only serve as an emergency for a chipped nail. If you really want to have a tool that excels in nail care then choose a Wenger Clip or a Victorinox Classic. Both are great for keeping your fingernails clean and smooth. They're small and fit on your keychain or in your watch pocket.

If you want a regular size SAK then choose one with scissors, and a file as well. The Mountaineer is one of the thinest SAKs with those implements. Try to get the newest ones with the improved metal file (way smoother than the old models with the XXXXX patern), which work better on soft materials like fingernails.

I've been carrying SAKs for over 20 years, never had a toothpick or tweezers fall out.
Not saying it couldn't happen, just that it is unlikely.
I really like the nail-file on the Compacts hook.
I usually use the scissors on my Vic Compact to trim my fingernails.
Never been a fan of nail clippers, just like scissors better.
Even the baby scissors on Vic Classics and Leatherman Micras are ok for trimming nails.

I like the Cadet a lot and carry one every day - great nail file. Since it has no scissors, I keep a Rambler on my keychain. A Classic would be thinner/cheaper but still has the scissors. Not ideal if you only want to carry one knife, but a combination seems to work for some (me included)

Also would say that i have never had the toothpick or tweezers get lost. Add the fact that they are easy to replace, i would'nt make that much of a consideration in deciding.
