I think i'm gonna pick up a sheeple friendly SAK when i order my neck knife however, i was wondering if anyone knew what kind of steel they use in their knives?

odd question, i'm just curious. I'm looking at the victorinox 125th anniversary climber

They call it "inox," which means "stainless." It is a fine-grained stainless with high stain resistance and run soft, mid 50's Rc. Easy to dull but also easy to sharpen, and takes a very keen edge. I believe it is similar to 440A stainless.

Do yourself a favor and buy an alox (aluminum handle) knife. The farmer is one of the best. They have thicker blades and are bombproof. The plastic handles on the rest break quickly.

I vote for the alox handled ones, too; the only downside is you don't get the tweezers/toothpick. You can solve that by getting one of the little Classics for your keychain. (You forget it's there 'til you need it. ;))

I've never had them break, but I've had them loosen up eventually on almost every SAK I've carried for any length of time. I usually end up epoxying them on.

I recently got my first SAK, a Victorinox Soldier (alox), and I'm more than impressed. The quality is OUTSTANDING for the $23 i paid for it. Get the alox.

More accolade for the Alox Farmer here. I love mine. As much as I like the classic red handled ones, of which I have about a dozen, the Alox versions are my favs. I have a red, green and sliver Alox Cadets, silver Alox Farmer, Black Alox Pioneer and a silver Alox Soldier.

The steel is stainless and a bit soft but gets the job done.

+1 for the alox farmer, they're a bit nicer than the plastic variety. Everyone should own at least one SAK. the quality to price ratio is insane on everything victorinox makes. I just wish they would bring the HRC on the blade up a bit or even offer a premium steel blade at a higher price. I'd gladly pay an extra 20 or 30 bucks to get a farmer with an s30v or similar blade.

i'm not a huge fan of the alox to be honest. and i haven't seen the tools i want in an alox sak

[sigh] plus i find the 125th anniversary to be quite striking

That there thing ain't no good: it don't got no saw. Y'all get y'sef a Farmer, and y'll be happy.

Actually, the 125th anniversary is quite striking. You might want to get one to keep, or carry on special occasions, but get a Farmer for EDC.

is this one any good?

It's huge and hard to use, but I started a fire and carved feather sticks etc with mine just to see if it could be done with any reasonable amount of effort. If you can afford to lug around such a gigantic knife go for it. It has a lifetime warranty!

I carry a swisschamp, or swisschamp XLT most days, I've done everything with my XLT from starting fires, to food prep, to repairs on my truck. Great little knife. The only downside of them is the lack of a good set of pliers. My next purchase will be the Wenger Mike Horn ranger with foldable pliers, but that may be out of your price range, but certainly not if you're considering an XAVT.

I have an alox soldier and farmer, and these guys aren't blowing smoke up your butt, they are definitely bombproof, however, I've NEVER had my celidor scales get loose or fall off, and my swisschamp is now 12 years old.....besides if they wear out send it in to vic and theyll replace them for free. I had so much grime and whatever else built up in my swisschamp XLT after taking it in the lake, camping, hunting, fishing etc the implements wouldn't move smoothly anymore. I sent it in to vic service and they not only cleaned and put the knife back into perfect working order they also replaced the cellidor scales with new tweezers, toothpick, AND ballpoint pen.

Sure it's good, if you have a small boy with a little red wagon to carry it around for you. As DreamHawk said, that thing is a monster. Interesting, but way too much of way too much.

Personally, I like the Farmer or the Classic, depending on what I'm doing. If, as you said earlier, you don't like Alox for some reason, I believe you can also get the Farmer with those red plastic handles (shudder).

I should mention that I spend a pretty fair amount of time outdoors, so I do use the saw on the Farmer. There are others that are much like the Farmer, but with tools other than the saw. Some of the other guys are far more knowledgeable than I am about the various models, so maybe they can help you out.

The swiss army platform is a great design and IMO evryone man or woman should have one on them all the time. I always have a vic spartan on me. I am going to switch it out with a farmer soon.

Great combo:thumbup:
