Sak Scale life?

They can crack or break under certain conditions. That said I have never had one crack or break on me. Some cellidor 74mm scales are hard to find. Common ones are around 7.50 USD each excluding shipping.

Once I had a Wenger with cellidor scales that wouldn't stay on, but except for that, I have had no problem with scales cracking or breaking on any of my actively used Vic SAKs, none less than ten and one 20 years old. They don't get abused, though.

I had one of the scales come off. I superglued it back on, but it trapped my tweezers in there. Paid for shipping both ways, and they fixed/replaced it for me.

I've had the same ones on my Huntsman for a year now with just a little wear on the finish. In my experience, if you go for cellidor, black ones show wear faster than the rest.

I've never broken a scale, I have a classic somewhere that the scales are worn pretty thin from bein on my keys for years though. I'm sure they will last a very long time if you don't drop the knife or put it though some serious use that you shouldn't use a SAK for.

I have a Tinker & a Huntsman that are both over 20 years old and I'm getting ready to replace the scales because they look bad, but they are still sound, no cracks.

The only scales I ever break are the ones on my keychain models. On the full size models, I've never had one break.

On a related note, many years ago a buddy and I were helping a friend of ours move. She needed a screwdriver for something and my pal takes out a very well-worn Spartan with just one handle scale for her to use. Later, I commented that his SAK was broken. He looked at me a little puzzled and said, "It still cuts. Still unscrews screws and opens beers. Doesn't seem broken to me." :) Next time I run into him, I need to ask if he still has that old knife.

This is why I took to using a leather key fob sheath for my classic. Saves being beat up by the keys and other items on my keyring.

Well the first dang day I had my vic compact my 7 yr old daughter was monkeying around with it and tried to jam the ink pen into the tweezer slot and made a nice half inch hairline crack in the scale.....yeah. kids. Good thing I love her so much.
