I posted this in the maintenance forum but I figured with all the SAK talk here you guys would know best :D Anyways....
The factory scales on my Vic Explorer are loose on one side and falling off on the other completely. This is confusing and frustrating because the knife has never been dropped and upon inspection, neither of the scales have damages or imperfections to the holes that correspond to the rivets.
I was thinking of using a thin layer of adhesive like gorilla glue or Loctite gel to permanently bond them on.I'm also considering replacing them completely with custom scales but after googling it I haven't found much on how to go about getting the customs.
Suggestions on how to repair the current scales and find replacements would be very helpful. Thanks- Andrew

I've had them come loose in the past on the classic I have on my keyring. I believe Goop is the recomended stuff to use. I got that from felinevet over on sosak.

I'd second that =check with Rotokid or Felinevet - OR send the knife in to Shelton Ct. Service center. This time of year turnaround is slow -but the knife will be gone over throughly - this being said - I reattached scales to a favorite Classic with superglue - a dot in each hole and guick snap together. it's still holding!
Peace

Use superglue in mine.. Use it with extra caution so it wont ruin your knife.. So far after years,it hold perfectly.no play,no loosen up, no damage on the cellidor.. Very satisfied with it.

I've used superglue on my Rambler. One of the scales had come loose, and the tweezers were slipping out. So, I removed the scale, put a dot of glue in each hole, and a line along each side of the tweezer cavity. A vice grip and 10 hours later, it's holding like none other, with no damage to the cellidor.

The scales came loose on my Recruit several years ago. I used superglue and kept it clamped for about 24 hours. I has been perfect ever since.

It would not cost that much for a new set of factory replacement scales and they would pop on under some pressure just like the originals would. If you decide to glue or repair the old scales, use something like goop that can be removed easily at a later date otherwise you could be stuck with it.

It occurred to me a few times that scales came loose, but that was my own fault. I swapped scales. I put a drop of superglue in the holes in the scales where the pins go in and although I can't swap scales anymore, they're now far from loose.

Meltglue could be a way to be able to take them off later again. I use it on skipoles and it can be removed in boiling water.
That said I have used super glue on 2 of mine reed ones. A tourist and a classic, bouth came loose by dropping into floor. As its almost impoosible to take away again I recomend doing it thoroughly. I have used it in the holes and around the frame. Its strong enough to hold together for always in the holes but dirt can creep into it between the spacer and the sideslab. Glue around the frame makes it dirttight.
I sometimes use them on game or fish so that is esential to me ceeping them clean.
