Funny,
I was just researching a similar problem. I picked up an explorer for like $9 on ebay, except one of the scales had pieces broken off.
I was going to try to get replacements, but then read a few threads on doing custom scales.
Since I am a cub scout den leader, I thought a scout theme might be cool. I picked up a small brass fleur-de-lis pin at the council store, and when I got home, looked over my available handle materials. I settled on an emerald-colored diamondwood, although I have never done a knife with the slabs so thin. I hope it's not too thin to be durable. I'm also wondering whether to just epoxy the pin on the surface or to set it in some. The toothpick and tweezers may be a problem as well.
Well anyway, when I get it done, maybe I can get some pictures up.
So James, you may want to try something a bit different...
