I really love serrated blades on a pocket knife, but it seems that choices are limited in more traditional patterns (I consider the 91MM SAK a traditional pattern), with more serrated knives being the tactical variety.

I picked up a serrated Victorinox Spartan off eBay for a very reasonable price. I immediately fell in love with the super sharp serrated blade, which is great for cutting fruit, bread, or nearly anything. It is a wicked sharp blade that seems to never get dull, no matter how much you use it.

I also really love the slim design. This is a perfect knife to carry when I go visiting clients or to conferences (I check my knife with my checked bags), as the slim design carries nicely, providing me with a razor sharp knife and some valuable tools.

I was browsing Swiss Bianco's eBay listings, and noticed he had some scales for the "Plus" models in 91MM. This intrigued me, as I had heard that it is really easy to replace scales on a SAK, so I ordered a set, because it occurred to me that all I needed to do to make my knife a plus model (which includes a place to hold a pin and ballpoint pen, as well as the ubiquitous toothpick and tweezers) was to change the scales. The only color choices he had were yellow, white, and blue, so I opted for yellow.

It took me only about 5 minutes to change out the scales. They pop off nicely if you slide a thin blade in between the scale and aluminum side. The easiest way to do this it so remove the toothpick and tweezers and slide a thin blade carefully in and gently pry the scales off. Once the old scales are off, just snap the now ones on (they only fit one way), and I used a vice lined with some leather to gently squeeze them flush with the knife.

I had a spare pin, ballpoint pen, and small screwdriver (all easy to find on eBay) and just added them to my knife and I then had a brand new model, custom made by me.

I have decided to call it "The Consultant". Here is a picture with all the parts:

I kind of want a serrated spartan, would be neat if it was in the "small" mid size. Wonder if stroping on denim would help keep the serrations sharp.

I have a Spyderco Sharpmaker that works great for sharpening serrations. What is nice about a serrated knife, however, is that it seems to stay sharp forever. I can use a serrated times about 10 times longer than a non-serrated knife before I start noticing it is getting dull.

I realize this thread is old but there's not a lot of info about serrated spartans out there. I recently ordered on from a large recreational equipment store for a very good price. I plan on doing some scale swapping when it arrives to make it a plus model also. I'll get some pics up when it's done, I'm looking forward to trying out that main blade, should make a great hiking/camp knife.

I've actually considered a serrated spartan for general pocketknife duty. I do love the way the Victorinox paring knives cut, and I have a little Eze-Lap diamond hoe that looks like a small pen, and it sharpens the small Vic serration's very well. I use the rat-tail like diamond homelike a small file, and get in-between the serrations and it's wicked when Im done. Not hard to sharpen at all. Cuts fibrous stuff like rope and cord like butter.

I got it and swapped scales to make it a plus model. I've been carrying it every day, but it hasn't been called into action yet

I wouldn't mind having a Tinker with the serrated but I would prefer the serrations be done like the GAK with a fine edge near the handle. I realize the 91mm knives have a lot less blade to worn with and it may not be worth it but I would still pick one up of I ever ran across it.

The pen is quite a handy addition, I find myself needing a pen constantly and eithe don't have one on me or it's run dry and a backup would be handy.

It's one of those knives where it's been more useful to everybody but me so far :D So far I've loaned the pen, the pin and the eyeglass screwdrivers. Needless to say everyone has been impressed with this little knife and how useful it is

okay, now i am totally confused... never seen one of these with a serrated blade before. is this an older model or what am i missing as i can't find it on the (german) victorinox page.

According to SAKwiki.com:

The Weekender model is a serrated main blade version of the Spartan. This model has been reported discontinued in the past, but resurfaced as part of a special picnic set (ref: 2008 Catalog), and was produced again in 2012 and started to appear in Target Stores in the US, and from a small number of other retailers. Since 2008 Victorinox has used the name Serrated Spartan in the US.

It seems to be recently discontinued, at least in the USA: it is missing from Victorinox's US web catalog, and some big retailers are showing it "out of stock." Run a Google web (not "shopping") search for "Victorinox serrated Spartan" and do your own search in the obvious places. You can still find it new and discounted 20% or 25% from the $24.50 list price. If you want "Plus" scales for it, SwissBianco just got in a bunch — very nice!
