Can anyone suggest the best method for sharpening a sak?

i have a spyderco sharp maker and was wondering if i should use that and if so at what angle.

thanks

JC

Same way you would any other knife... The more acute the angle, the better cutting performance; to a degree. But remember, its a very thin flat ground blade so even a rather obtuse angle is going to cut fairly well.

thanks for the info dude, just wanted to confirm before i went ahead and gave er a sharpening :D

I convex sharpen my SAKs using the mousepad / wet&dry paper method. Its very easy to do and gets the blade extremely sharp. If you try this method, just remember to hold the blade nearly flat to the paper, you only need to lift the spine slightly.

I've used this method and it does, indeed work GREAT with SAK's. Maybe its the soft steel, or maybe the thin profile... but it just works fantastic.

...as do DMT stones... as do arkansas... Sak's are just easy to sharpen I suppose...

I just got a sharpmaker recently and my SAKS are probably the easiest knives to sharpen. I used the 40 degree angle and both my farmers and my pioneer are razor sharp, far sharper than the way they came from Vic.

Once you got it sharpened, regular stropping brings back the edge easily, unless you use it on cables / wires .. ;)

+1

Just tried it and the strop works great.

What grit wet or dry paper do you use? Thx! :D
