Wow, that's super clean! A couple of questions if you don't mind? What is on the back? Forgive my ignorance, but does the sheath attach to a belt in some way? Also, what is that on the flap, and how did you achieve it? I'm referring to the line that goes up and around the post. Is it an inlay of some sort, or was there a resist and dye used?

Lovely case for sure.

Edit- okay after looking closer it looks like the back is an opening horizontal carry belt loop? If so, do the posts poke your side (or back) at all? The line almost looks like it was made with a stitch groover, then left natural?

Did you make the compartment by stacking layers that had the centers cut out?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to wrap my head around case making in general. :)

WOW!

Nicely done!

Never built a leather sheath, can you share how you made it?

Yes to most of your questions .
The line is just done with the stitch grooved after the leather is dyed ( don't know if I like it or not , maybe I should have just dyed the groove black ? )
The belt loop is horizontal and opens up so that you can take the sheath off without taking your belt off . ( probably a feature that won't get used much , but thought I'd try it , and I like it so will use that idea again )
The sides or welt of the sheath are 3 pieces of leather glued together then using the knife as an outline the centre is cut out .
Those 3 layers plus the top and bottom layers , plus the belt loop total 6 layers of leather that you have to hand saw through . Try doing that sometime without using at least a couple of swear words :) .

I'm a rookie at this bending leather game , so I'm not the best option to seek advice from .
Gary Graley has some tutorials up the top of the main page , and if you are new to the game you should read those word for word every night for a week so that it sinks in . It is what got me started , and he deserves a medal for putting those up for all of us to see .

Also, I'm not sure if everyone knows it or not , but Gary has Broken his ankle recently and I'm sure a few " How are you " messages from the team here wouldn't go astray .

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't looked at the thread because it's for folders and I'm trying to get away from folders in general, but I now realize that that's silly.

I'm pretty sure that I almost broke my ankle here at work last night. That's really gotta suck. Gary, if you see this, I hope you heal soon and true. I've broken too many parts and often they are never the same. :(

I'll say again, that's a beauty, and do I understand correctly, you glued the pieces together and then sawed out the inner opening? Which I think would be the way to do it, drilling the holes before cutting to provide a more solid block, less chance of the sides moving on you.

I remember having that idea way back when I was into the higher end butterfly knives, and having a small notch where the horns would fall into, like a detent of sorts, but never gave it a try.

And thanks for mentioning my ankle, I told my wife last night to get me a shot that will put me to sleep for 6 weeks, and then wake me up :) and buy a really big diaper ;)

That for the compliment Gary , I really rate that highly .
This was more of a design and technique exercise than a true working sheath . SAK 's belong in your pocket , but I will still wear it occasionally until I end up gifting it to someone , like I do with most of my stuff .
I wanted to do a sheath with zero wet molding for a change , and this was the result . Also I'm really enjoying the look of the exposed welts ( natural or lightly dyed ) with a darker colour on the main body of the sheath , its really pleasing to my eye at least .
Don't go giving your wife to many ideas about sedating you , she might think its a good idea :)
Hope the ankle is sorting itself out , rest and get better quick .

Instead of starting something new I thought I'd just tack this onto this thread .

A friend was so impressed with my latest Green Alox SAK that he has ordered a similar model .
When he rang me to tell me I knew what was coming next " Hey old mate , how about whipping me up a quick sheath for it " .
Great I thought an excuse to make a pocket slip sheath which I want to concentrate on making from now on .
When I told him my ideas there was silence on the phone , I knew he thought I was Bonkers .
" Whats the use of a sheath if ya can't hang it on your belt , have you been sipping on the Bride's cooking Sherry again " .
I tried to explain the intrinsic greatness of the Pocket Slip but it fell on deaf ears .

So I made him this , and it definitely will be my last for a while .
He gave me a list of what he thinks make a great sheath , and I purposely did non of them :) .
The first thing he will mutter is " different " , but he also knows to not look a gift horse in the mouth .

Agree! very nice Ken, your friend is indeed a lucky man to have you so near by, but you did feed him the desire to have said knife too, so it was partially your fault ;)

And I don't know if you have hobby shops near by, I bought smaller split rings for my SAK's as the ones that come with them are far too large, for me at least, so he may want to check into that also. I did a short thread on that shown here

I've been really taken by the SAK bug lately so thought I'd add a few pics to this thread .

That is some really nice work Ken! Really nice. You have indeed been bitten by the Sak bug for sure. Did ya get my pm?

Thanks Dave .
You have just reminded me about the PM , I was going to reply at the time but got sidetracked .
I will be in touch .

Ken

I really like the versatility of the last one where it can be a neck sheath and a belt sheath. that last pic had not loaded for some reason when I posted prior.

SAK, I'm thinking that has a different meaning ;)

Superb Accoutrements by Ken :)

Very cleanly made and also looks quite handy too !!!
Excellent work Ken !
