SAK Soldier for EDC

I need an EDC blade that should be rather compact and fit in the pocket of my jeans without feeling to big and heavy. I have thought about a folding locker but I also like SAK:s and have today a Vic Spartan and a Huntsman. However, a lot of you guys seems to favor the Vic Soldier model. It looks compact also because it has no corkscrew and it has one blade only which is larger than the large blade on ordinary red Vic:s which I think is good so I really consider the possibility to buy a Vic Soldier instead of a locking folder. However, it looks heavy. Any of you Vic Soldier owners that can give me some advice? Do you think it is as good for EDC as a locking folder? Will it be too large and heavy for a jeans pocket? Thanks.

Skalman, it is not heavy. It is also thinner than for example a Spartan. Very unobtrusive. I EDC-ed for a while, especially for the nice in-line awl.
If you don't need additional tools, it is an excellent EDC.

The soldier is a great EDC knife, light enough to forget that it is there until you need it, but also strong enough to not let you down when you do need it. As Littleknife points out, the awl will surprise you with its usefulness once you get used to it I have used it as a marking tool when I have forgotten a pencil and to make holes in a makeshift bait bucket.

The Soldier is indeed not heavy at all. It's a great knife for EDC and of course it has the additional features a regular knife does not have. Just some days ago I used my Soldier at work when we had to open a computer and there was no screw driver around. I used the can opener (the tip serves as a screw driver) to open the computer, remove the CD-ROM player and even open the bottom plate of the player. It worked well for three different sizes of phillips screws. Of course this is just an example. The Soldier can be used for countless things. A friend of mine recently gave me a 1987 Soldier. The Soldier must have seen some serious use, but it still was in good shape even after all those years. It almost felt like a new one when I opened and closed the blade and the other tools. In my opinion you can't go wrong if you buy a Soldier.:)

A Soldier is one of my most frequently carried Vics. When Wilma was on the way, I used the screwdriver on my Soldier and a PST2 to put down and secure my awnings. Some of the screws are old and rusty, and I thought I might need a larger dedicated screwdriver, but the SAK did a fine job.

"Will it be too large and heavy for a jeans pocket?"

Don't worry about that, I carry mine daily in my flimsy suit pants as a "dress" EDC. Fine for that, so definitely not too big or bulky for jeans. I think it helps that it's all round and smooth all the way around. No key ring or, as you mentioned, corkscrew to get hung up on anything.

I keep trying to convince myself I need to buy a bigger, tougher, or cooler EDC knife, but the sad truth is, I don't. The Soldier does everything I ever need, and any other knife purchases are pretty much superfluous. :(

Not that that stops me. :D

I think the Soldier is an Excellent EDC size knife!

The version with the saw blade is even better! ( Pioneer?)

The Soldier is great, strong, two backsprings wide, thin because of the alox handles without plastic scales.

The Farmer is great, like the soldier plus saw (three backsprings wide).

If you want something lighter and thinner in alox take a look at the Victorinox Cadet.

I EDC the Alox Pioneer (like the Soldier but with a keyring) to work everyday. It sits in my right front trousers pocket and I generally forget about it until I need it. Right now I'm looking for an Alox Cadet (like the Pioneer, but with a smaller blade) which should be even more unobtrusive.

I have three of these in my collection. One I got new and two used. I keep them in coats and one in my pocket on the keys. The New one is twenty years old, the others undated older ones. They remain tight sharp and unbroken. If I havent broke it its a good knife.

I love my little Cadet--GREAT knife! Not trying to threadjack, but...

My 68 year old friend showed my his old Tinker: It is VERY busted up, and dull as anything. I think he sharpened it on his grinder (cringe).

Anyway, does anyone know where I can get the best deal on a Soldier?
I think he would love it as a replacement, since he really liked my Cadet.

Pedlinbob, The last soldier I purchased was at the local Target, clearance priced right after Christmas last year for just under $10. I noticed that Ace Hardware has the economy tinker (more durable and scratch resistant nylon handles) on sale for less than nine bucks. I think the sale was running until the end of the month. I've seen posts here that Amazon has been running sales on different models as well. If you friend likes the cadet, their were NIB copper colored ones on e-bay for about twelve dollars not too long ago.Happy hunting, hope this helps.
