SAK to replace my Leatherman?

I posted a review of the SAK Alox Solo yesterday, and a few people made good natured comments about getting more SAKs, or getting a 'real SAK', or that sort of thing. A single blade only knife, no matter how nice, isn't what most people love about SAKs, so I understand the idea that I should try something with tools so I can get the full SAK experience. (I did buy an Alox Classic, but I guess that doesn't count.) I do find the idea of the Alox Pruner appealing - I could put the pruner blade to good use in the garden, but it looks like these may be out of production at the moment. Also, I think the 'real SAK' idea isn't just two knife blades, but something with some tools in addition to blades. So, I've done a little research and a little thinking about what kind of SAK would work for me.

Normally, I carry a knife and a Leatherman Style PS, and very occasionally a Teale Designs Micro Keychain EDC Pocket Pry Bar. For me to get a 'real' SAK, it would have to at least replace the Leatherman I already have. I tend to like my knives fairly lean (I strongly prefer a single-blade slipjoint to a multi-blade knife or a locking knife), so adding tools to the knife can't wreck the knife experience for me. Overall weight and size matter, as well. Having said all that, if I could have one really nice knife that also had the multitool capabilities I actually care about, and was still a good knife, well, that would be great.

So I looked at some of the Alox's that are the same size and have the same blade as the Alox Solo, to see what other tools they provide. I specifically looked at the Alox Farmer and Alox Pioneer X. Just going through the list of tools available across these two knives:
  • Scissors - the only time I ever use the scissors on the Leatherman is when I have it but don't have my knife. That won't apply here, because these SAKs have a knife blade (which, by the way, means that for no-knife situations, I'd still carry the Style PS).
  • Bottle opener - I don't really need this. <begin rant> I understand having a bottle opener on a multitool or a knife, but in the last few years I've seen bottle openers available on the following things: key ring, belt buckle, Hawaiian shirt pocket, top button on jeans, sunglasses, sole of flip-flops, flashlight, wallet, pen, pry tool, hat brim, watch, travel mug, water bottle, messenger bag, cell phone cover, etc. All of that has just made me not want to have a bottle opener on me at all. The Style PS has one in the carabiner clip, so at least it's unobtrusive, but not having one at all would be an improvement. <end rant>
  • Wide flat screwdriver - I've never needed a flathead screwdriver on a multitool.
  • Small flat screwdriver - I've never needed a flathead screwdriver on a multitool.
  • Wire stripper - on the very, very few occasions that I've needed to strip wire but didn't have my actual tools with me, a knife blade worked fine. Not great, but if I'm doing enough of this to want better than a knife, I'll just get some tools. (I'm not really doing a lot of emergency electrical work with my EDC setup.)
  • Reamer / punch - the only use case I see anybody list for this is to 'punch new holes in my belt'. I made my current belt, and if I need to add new holes to it, I'll use one of the Tandy leather punches I have.
  • Can opener - if I'm car-camping and bringing canned food with me, I also have a rotary-blade can opener. If I'm backpacking, I'm not carrying food in cans.
  • Saw - this is interesting, but I don't think I really need it - I've never carried an EDC saw, and I've never missed having one.
  • Key ring - not going to attach this to my keys.
Yeah, so other than the knife blade (which I already have on the Solo), there's nothing here I want, or would be likely to use. So I approached this from the other direction: what tools do I use, and then are there SAKs that have them? The tools I that I've used often are:
  • Pliers
  • Tweezers
  • Phillips screwdriver
And that's about it. So, looking around, it looks like the Deluxe Tinker has all three of those! But it also weighs almost 2.5 times the Solo, has a ton of other tools - 17 total, according to the Swiss Army website! I don't need any of those other ones, so they just add bulk without value for me. Plus, it's cellidor, not Alox, so it's not that attractive to me.

So what I think would be interesting to me would be an Alox with the large blade and the pruner blade on one spring, the pliers from the Deluxe Tinker on another spring, the Phillips screwdriver on the back of the handle, and tweezers in the scale (even though the Alox never come with tweezers). I suppose one of the many SAK customizers could put something like that together, maybe. Not sure if it would be worth what it would cost, but I think I'd really like it.

So until Victorinox builds that knife (which probably nobody but me would buy), I guess I'll stick with carrying a knife and the Leatherman Style PS. But I'm open to hearing about other SAKs that might fit my use cases, since I am really impressed with the Alox Solo.

Interesting, if you want to carry the solo do so. I have 1 it's a good knife and often do sak leatherman combo. The thing about Saks is there is 1 for everyone. Also there are a few single blade models, florist, pruners with different size hawkbill blades. In the 111 models you have the sentinel. The excelsior might appeal to you just 2 blades, comes in normal or alox scales.

I don't believe that alox models offer back side tools... Anyone feel free to correct no on that!

I use the awl on my pioneer for far more than just "putting holes in the belt" although I did do that twice for the kids this past weekend. The wire stripper is nothing more 5han a notch at the bottom of the large screwdriver/bottle opener. I use that tool the most on my personal sak's. As a matter of fact, the least used tool on my pioneer is the knife blade, I don't personally use the bottle opener on anything, that much included and useless feature on many things is just irritating to me as well. I actually use the end of my Douk Douk, or the spine of a belt knife for that.

My personal advice would come to this... Try a pioneer or electrician paired with a small pair of pliers. If you aren't impressed with the victorinox lineup, Leatherman still makes kick assed tools... But like me you may find yourself surprised at how often a Swiss army knife fits the bill.

Have a look at Swiss Bianco. They have Pruners in some nice colours. Forget having to use it as a gardening tool, the pruner blade is the only tool that clamshell packaging actually fears. :D It's great for opening anything.

Carry what you like, and what works for you. I'm not a SAK person; though I have an Alox Solo (orange) that I carry occasionally. I keep a few tools in a pouch on my backpack... I've used all of them; but I don't use any of them often. (Realistically, I'm more often wanting something I don't have; so I'm actually considering loading another pouch...but then I'd be carrying twice as much stuff that rarely gets used; and one has to draw a line somewhere)
For me, the answer was whatever knives I carry, plus a 5" Knipex Cobra. (I figured I'd stop carrying the Knipex after my 3 month trial period; but I use them far more often than I anticipated.). If I need something more, hopefully it's in my backpack.

No shame in not wanting to carry extra tools you don't need. Don't waste your money on something you don't really want or wouldn't enjoy. Although, I will say I never knew how much I needed a Swisschamp until I got my Swisschamp. I started off with the Tinker and worked my way up from there. I cant go through my day without a Swisschamp or Leather Wave on me at all times. Usually, accompanied by a single, locking blade knife like my BM 943, Spyderco Para 3, or Buck 110. To each, his own!

The key to EDC gear is to find what works for you.

I'd say stick with what you have. The SAK pliers is no replacement for the LM pliers. You like Alox and unless you want to venture into SAK customization like Spikediesel Spikediesel , you won't find what you like.

I'm the designated IT/fix it guy in my office. I carry a LM Charge + SAK Explorer (probably my favorite) combo every day. It might be overkill but it has saved my butt and gotten me some bonus points at work for fixing crap.

That Swiss Bianco combo seems to fit your needs too! I don't think I've seen that before. Pomsbz Pomsbz

It’s called the “special mechanic” but most know it as the mechanic junior. This was a model produced for Radio Shack and other special order limited runs.
Thanks.

If it was limited production it is going be a real difficult to find.

I carry a Knipex XS with a Cadet and a SwissCard Lite. It all fits in a leather EDC caddy. The SwissCard is in the back side sleeve. Lots of utility even without the Knipex.
