All right people, it's roll call time again and this time will be SAK Victorinox only.
What's the 1 and most important feature of SAK you look out for?
For me,
Victorinox Swisstool
SAK Workchamp
SAK Classic

Most infortant feature: scissors

For me,

SwissTool (very rigid to me)
CyberTool (nice computer's companion)
MiniChamp (Whenever there's a small job)

I think I'm going to get
Soldier (nice alox handle)
WorkChamp XL (biggest yet)

The blade is very useful to me.
Easy to sharpen and very good edge retention.
Smooth cutting due to that polished surface.

This is really going to sound crazy, but....the toothpick.

I look for economy of design. If I'm in a situation to carry something big on my belt or in a backpack, I'll go with my Leatherman Wave everytime. But when I'm going to be carrying in pocket, then I gravitate towards my Spartan (augmented with the little screwdriver that fits into the corkscrew). I also have an Adventurer which I carried with me daily in for five years when I was living in Europe. I love that big, locking blade. I guess I'd like to have 'em all, but the designs I like best are pretty basic: Compact, Waiter, Tinker, Spartan, Sportsman.
IMHO, the best new model that Victorinox has come up with in awhile is the Rambler. Amazing to think that they could take the Classic and add a cap-lifter/phillips head screwdriver to it and still have it fit on a key chain. Anyway to get to the original question that started this thread, which tools could I do without. Well, I never cared to have a saw or file. I have no use for a magnifying glass. I don't trust the models with a clock or LED light or pen (just don't see how those features could be made as tough as the rest of the knife ... instead, I'll wear a watch, carry a pen and carry my Photon LED). I would never scale a fish with a SAK scaler. The SAK pliers seem rinky-dink to me, again give me my Wave for that. Don't even get me started on the cuticle pusher or orange peeler. No thanks.

I have two, The first is a real old red handle job. I don't think they make the exact model any more, it is two blade, scissors, file, Bottle and can opener on top, cork screw on the bottom. This one is old enough to still have the silver tip on the tweezers rather than the gray plastic.

The second, newer one is a Soldier. Fewer tools but beefier construction.

The knife blades are most used on both. Can opener works very well. Cork screw is about as good as it gets.

My favorites are:
Classic if I need something really small.
Spartan or Soldier for everyday use.
Ranger for when weight and bulk are not a concern.
For years I carried a Climber or an Executive and I thought they were the perfect combination but for some reason they're gone now and I use other models.

I have only one. It is a delux (or super) tinker. I use the small blade the most. Does anyone know why there is a corkscrew on the Climber? It has been my experience that alcohol and vertical rock dont mix. I am thinking about getting a Parachutist.

I carry either the Adventurer or the Locksmith (both with locking 3.25" blades). Most commonly used is the knife blade next is the small screwdriver / can opener blade. I use the s/co blade for small screws, staple removing, light prying, as a hook to pull things out of tight places, and sometimes even as a can opener. I generally want to carry 3 screwdriver blades, including a philips.

I keep a very old but mint condition swiss army knife in my desk drawer and I reach for it daily for little odd jobs.My swiss tool hasn't really seen action cause I had it engraved and to me it's my nicest piece. To anyone looking for quality and a tool that can handle most anything, you really can't lose with these guys.

Rucksack... if its not in this tool, you don't really need it.

BTW is it just me, or are swiss army knives not very popular?

Scouter,

Depends what you are climbing! Or, where you plan end up at the end of the day. Did you ever see a climbing shop that didn't sell wine skins?

Trailmaster (and before that, Rucksack)

I like the wood saw, awl, and of course locking blade (altho' it's usu. a "back-up" to a fixed).

The Alox handled series (Soldier and Pioneer) provide the best combination of usefulness per space/weight consideration. I also like the thicker blades on these models. I have compared the tools on the Soldier and Pioneer to those of the larger models (plastic handles) and found that they appear to be of heavier construction also. This may just seem that way on my knives however.

I’ve tried several of the larger models but always returned to the Soldier/Pioneer.

However…today I’m ordering one of the new Alox handled Cadet models. They are ¼ inch shorter than the Soldier, but have the file in place of the reamer. The file should prove more useful.

These models have never really let me down. If I can’t do the task with these or one of the other knives I’m carrying at the time (Sebenza and Spyderco Standard serrated), I have to go back to the truck or shop for a real tool anyway.

On my Tinker, next to the actual knife blades, I would have to say the excellently designed can opener. I don't open many cans with it, but I find the little screwdriver on the end to be quite useful. I cannot imagine why "Wegner" wouldn't use the same design on their knives.

I like the saw.BTW I'm looking for a tinker sized sak with a saw,the camper would be perfect if I could swap the corkscrew for a philipshead.

Victorinox has thought of that-- The Hiker.

The Super Tinker. I use the Phillips head screwdriver often. Its bottom placement allows good leverage.

Swiss Army Tool....Tops!

The Executive, always have that knife with me!

The Cowboy, a large locking blade, keep that with my wallet, use it as my food knife, don't let others use it or clean my toes with it, nice size, slices through large sandwiches with the longer blade.

Can't beat the SAK quality.
